Londonis by far the largest city
inEnglandand theUnited Kingdom . 8.63
million people live in London , which is on
theRiver Thames. It is thecapital of
theUnited Kingdom.
For a long time, London was a small city. All
its people lived inside the walls that were
built by the Romans. This area is still called
theCity of London. There were many villages
around the city. Gradually, more and more
people came to live there. Then, step by step,
the villages joined together into one huge city.

Most people in London are British. However, London


also has many immigrants. These people come from
many different countries. They speak many different
languages and have different religions and cultures.
There are also many people from different countries
who stay in London on business.

Many people visit London as tourists. They may see


the famous "Sights of London". These sights include
palaces,churchesandmuseums.

the horizontal walkway that offers one of the best
vantage points in London.

Buckingham Palaceis the official London residence and principal


workplace of the British monarch. It is in the centre of London, in
theCity of Westminster. Thepalaceis a setting for state occasions
and royal hospitality. It has been a focus for theBritish peopleat
times of national rejoicing and crisis.

Buckingham Palace has 775 rooms. It is one


of few working palaces in the world. Leading
up to it is a ceremonial road,The Mall.

TheLondon Eyeis a large metalFerris wheel. It is also


known as theMillennium Wheeland is one of the
largestobservation wheelsin the world. Since midJanuary 2015 it has been known in branding as theCocaColaLondon Eye, after an agreement signed in
September 2014. The London Eye is located in London
and when you are on it you get a fabulous view of
London.
The Eye was opened in 2000. It is 135metreshigh. At the
time it was built, in 1999, it was the tallest giant wheel in
the world, and at present it is Europe's tallest Ferris
wheel.

The Legend of The Ravens

Beefeaters are also responsible for the Tower's


ravens - black birds which must always live in
the fortress on the banks of the Thames. The
legend says that if the ravens ever leave the
Tower, it will fall and the Kingdom will fall too.
