Recruiting
Recruiting is the process of generating a pool of
qualified applicants for organizational jobs
Recruiting Decisions
Recruiting strategy entails identifying where to
recruit, who to recruit, and what the job
requirements will be. One key consideration is
deciding about internal vs. external searches that
must be made.
Recruiting Decisions
Recruitment Sources
Internal Sources
Organizations recruit existing employees through job posting, or
communicating information about the vacancy on company
bulletin boards, in employee publications, on corporate intranets,
and anywhere else the organization communicates with
employees. Managers also may identify candidates to recommend
for vacancies.
External Recruiting
If internal sources do not produce sufficient acceptable
candidates for jobs, many external sources are available. These
sources include schools, colleges and universities, employment
agencies, labor unions, media sources, and trade and competitive
sources.
Recruitment Sources
Electronic Recruiting
Employers often begin the Internet search process by
establishing an organization website and listing jobs on it.
Alternatively, companies with a web page that specializes in
posting job listings (an Internet job service) can be used by job
seekers. Finally, online employment agencies can be used to post
jobs and find applicants on the Net.
Personnel Policies
An organizations personnel policies are its decisions about how it
will carry out human resource management, including how it will
fill job vacancies. These policies influence the nature of the
positions that are vacant.
Selecting
Selection is the process of choosing individuals who
have relevant qualifications to fill jobs in an
organization.
Screening Application
Nearly all employers gather background information on
applicants at the beginning of the selection process.
The usual ways of gathering background information
are by asking applicants to fill out application forms
and provide rsums. Organizations also verify the
information by checking references and conducting
background checks.
Assessment Center
A wide variety of specific selection programs that use multiple
selection methods to rate applicants or job incumbents on their
management potential. The methods are :
An in-basket exercise
Leaderless group exercise
Problem-solving simulation
Role-play exercise
Personality Inventories
Medical Examinations
Interviews
Selection Decisions
Multiple-Hurdle Model Process of arriving at a selection decision
by eliminating some candidates at each stage of the selection
process.
Compensatory Model Process of arriving at a selection decision
in which a very high score on one type of assessment can make
up for a low score on another.
