The retail state of the nation: Where we are now and what
does the future hold?

The Indian retail industry is one of the most

vibrant industries in the country. It is
currently ranked at 20th position among
the top 30 developing countries identified
by management consulting firm AT
Kearney in its 2014 Global Retail
Development Index (GRDI).
Indias retail market is likely to touch a
whopping Rs 47 trillion (US$ 738.71 billion)
by 2016-17, expanding at a compounded
annual growth rate of 15 per cent, a Yes
Bank-Assocham study
Indian online retail market is estimated to
grow over 4-fold to touch USD 14.5 billion
by 2018 on account of rapid expansion of
e-commerce in the country.

Flow of e-retail has changed the Face of Retail Industry ?

Retailers take the fight to e-tailers:

Retail brands have been unhappy for quite some
time about the allegedly disproportionate discounts
offered by e-commerce platforms like Flipkart,
Amazon India, Snapdeal, Myntra, and Jabong
among others. Last year Flipkart Big Billion Day
sale and Amazons Diwali Dhamaka Week have
intensified the brands voicing of displeasure,
apparently because of pressure from their offline
retailer partners.

E-commerce stores go exclusive

Flipkart in particular was able to secure exclusive
partnerships with Motorola and Xiaomi, which saw
the site become the only authorized location to get
products from either vendor in the country.

Brand Partnerships : which model are retailers using and which

model is best for you?

Franchise Agreements
As FDI is allowed by RBI in this route, companies like Pizza Hut, players such as Lacoste,
Mango, Nike as good as Marks as good as Spencer, have entered Indian marketplace by this
route.

Cash And Carry Wholesale Trading

Metro AG of Germany was the first significant global player to enter India through this route.

Strategic Licensing Agreements

Some foreign brands give exclusive licenses and distribution rights to Indian companies. Through
these rights, Indian companies can either sell it through their own stores, or enter into shop-inshop arrangements or distribute the brands to franchisees. Mango, the Spanish apparel brand
has entered India through this route with an agreement with Piramyd, Mumbai, SPAR entered
into a similar agreement with Radhakrishna Foodlands Pvt. Ltd

Manufacturing and Wholly Owned Subsidiaries.

The foreign brands such as Nike, Reebok, Adidas, etc. that have wholly-owned subsidiaries in
manufacturing are treated as Indian companies and are, therefore, allowed to do retail. Nike
entered through an exclusive licensing agreement with Sierra Enterprises but now has a wholly
owned subsidiary, Nike India Private Limited.
