The Grip

Badminton Grip:
You need to apply correct grip for each shot being played.
There are 2 basic types of grip:

Low Serve
Forehand:
1) Stand behind the service line
2) Sideways stance, lead with your non-racket
leg , weight on your back foot
3) Bring your racket back to waist level
4) Swing forward, pushing the shuttle low over
the net
Backhand:
1) Lead with your racket leg, non racket leg
slightly behind with your feet pointing forward
2) Short backswing then bring the racket
forward
3) Hold the shuttle in front of your waist level
4) Push the shuttle, keeping it low

The Low Serve is a way to start a game of


badminton. This shot needs to cross the
oppositions service line and can be used to

High Serve
1) Stand side on to the net, 2-3
feet behind the service line.
2) Hold the base of the shuttle
between the thumb and
forefinger.
3) Point your none racket
shoulder toward your target.
4) Hold the racket low down at
your side, ready to hit the
shuttle.
5) Drop the shuttle straight
down.
6) Swing the racket, and hit the
shuttle with an open racket
face so the

High Serve

The High Serve is an alternative to the low


serve. This choice of serve can be used to
Outwit an Opponent by pushing them to
the back of the court and following this up
with a drop shot.

Overhead Clear
1) Forehand grip
2) Sideways stance to the net, weight on your back foot
3) Bend your elbow and take the racket back
4) Contact the shuttle as high as possible and in front of
your body, straighten your elbow as you hit the shuttle
5) Follow through with your racket, weight is transferred
to front foot

The Overhead Clear can be used in a


game to push your opponent to the back of
the court. To Outwit your Opponent by
playing a overhead clear followed by a drop
shot.

Drop Shot
Drop shots are delicate shots.
They are played on both the
forehand and backhand,
underarm and overhead.

Drop Shot

Overhead drop:
- Same action as overhead
clear but you tap the shuttle as
you hit it, reducing the speed of
your racket

The Drop Shot is a delicate shot in the


game of badminton used to move you
opponent to the front of the court. Try the
Drop Shot followed by an underarm clear
to move your opponent around the court.

Net Shot
Net Shot
1) Forehand or backhand grip
depending on which side you are
hitting the shuttle
2) Keep your racket up in front of
your body
3) Lunge forward
4) Racket high, gently push the
shuttle over the net, keeping it as low
as possible.
5) The softer the push, the lower it
will go.

Net Shot

The Net Shot is a delicate shot in the game


of badminton. This is used to the shuttle just
drops over the other side of the net making
it very difficult for your opponent to return
the shot.

The Underarm Clear is used in badminton

underarm clear directly after a net shot.

Smash
The smash is an attacking shot, a good
smash is un-returnable. It is hit with power
and speed, downward towards your
opponents court.
1) Forehand grip
2) Sideways stance to the net, weight on your
back foot
3) Bend your elbow and take the racket back
4) Contact the shuttle as high as possible
and in front of your body using a strong
throwing action,
5) Straighten your elbow as you hit the
shuttle, snap down your wrist at the point of
impact to add extra power and angle

The Smash is the most attacking of all the


badminton shots. This should be aimed mid
court and low with power on your opponents
side of the court. This shot is very difficult to
return.

Rules
RULES OF BADMINTON
Here are some of the rules of the game of
badminton:
The game is played up to 21 points. If the
score reaches 20-20, the winner is the
player or team with a two point advantage
If the score goes up to 29-29, the winner is
first to reach 30 points.
The service must be made diagonally
across court
The server must serve the shuttlecock with
the head of the racket below waist height.
A shuttle landing on the line is in.
If a shuttle hits the net either on service or
during a rally, play continues.
A player may not make contact with the net
with either the racket or their body
The shuttle must be contacted on the
players own side of the net.
