‡ Two Units:

‡ G324 (Coursework - 50%)

‡ Exam must be sat in June as it requires the


coursework to be completed.
      
‡ The purpose of this unit is to:
‡ 1.) Assess your ability to plan and construct
media products using creative and technical
skills
‡ 2.) Assess your application of knowledge
and understanding in evaluating your own
work, showing how meanings and responses
are created.
‡ 3.) Assess your ability to undertake, apply
and present appropriate research.
      
‡  
‡ A media portfolio, comprising of main and
ancillary tasks
‡ A presentation of your research, planning
and evaluation in electronic formats

‡ Our portfolio will consist of video products


and print products
   !   
‡ Each candidate will reflect upon the creative
process and their experience of it. You will
evaluate your work electronically, being guided by
a set of 4 questions. Suitable formats for the
evaluation are:

‡ A podcast
‡ DVD extras, e.g: Directors commentaries.
‡ A blog
‡ A Powerpoint

‡ The evaluation should NOT be a written essay and


you should use images, audio and video to create
this.
      
‡ You can work in groups - maximum group
size is 4 people

‡ However, you MUST show you have done


the work individually and the examiner
MUST be able to see how you have
contributed to the group.
   !   
‡ You will create:

‡ A promotional package for a new soap


opera, to include a TV Trailer,
together with a listings magazine
front cover featuring the new soap
and a poster for the soap.
      
‡ You will be marked on the following categories:

‡ Research and Planning - 20% (out of 20 marks)

‡ Construction - 60%
(out of 60 marks - 40 for trailer, 10 for poster, 10 for
magazine cover)

‡ Evaluation - 20% (out of 20 marks)

‡ The whole piece is out of 100 marks


      
‡ The Evaluation:
‡ 4 questions which you must answer:

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or


challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

2. How effective is the combination of you main product and


ancillary tasks?

3. What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

4. How did you use new media technologies in the


construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

‡ This will take place from July -
January 2011.

‡ Each stage you will be given deadlines


to work to and we will mark each
stage separately, and give you
feedback on your work regularly.

‡ Purpose is to assess candidates knowledge
and understanding of media concepts,
context and critical debates through your
understanding of one contemporary media
issue and your ability to evaluate your own
practical work in theoretical ways.

Section A - Theoretical Evaluation of Production
(50 marks)
Section B - Contemporary Media Issues (50 marks)

‡ 3 Questions - 2 on your own production work (Section A),


one question from a choice of 6 topic areas (Section B).

and evaluate it in relation to a media concept. The
question will relate to the following concepts:

‡ Narrative

‡ Audience
‡ Media Language

‡ Questions will be set using ONE of these concepts only


and you only discuss ONE production.

according to a theory.

‡ You should be prepared to demonstrate


knowledge of a contemporary media issue.
This knowledge must combine knowledge of
at lest two media and a range of texts,
industries, audiences and debates. There
will be emphasis on the historical, the
contemporary and the future in relation to
the chosen topic with most attention on
the present.

choose to answer only one

‡ You have 1 hour to answer this question

‡ You must include theorists and notes from the


past, present and future within your answer.
