Part 1 of Semester Project

Harley Pospical, Taneesha Bales, Meagan Spencer

Lesson Plan
Third grade students will be divided
into small groups who will be studying
American history. They will be asked
to identify significant events that lead
up to the Revolutionary War.
Students will be able to understand
how America was founded why it was
founded upon the principles included
in the Declaration of Independence
and the Constitution.

Problem
One student, who is a member of
the LDS church, doesnt want to
work with his group because the
other students arent members.
When asked why, student replied,
My parents dont want me playing
with non-members.

Solution
1.In the moment...
When announcing groups, student
protests to being with group, so pull
student aside and ask why. Next,
either discuss with them the same
thing you would with rest of class, or
start student on piece of project to
work on separately, by themselves
for the day.

Solution
2. Discussion with the parents...
Call up the parents see if they can meet with you or at the very least have a verbal conversation with
them. See if they can bring the child with them. Discuss with the parents alone first and then bring the
child into the discussion. Explain the situation and then tell them what you did in that moment. Ask
parent, why they believe this happened? Why would the student react that way? ask nicely! Give
parents a chance to explain and give their own reasons. Explain to parents, I respect your desire to not
have your child to play with certain kids outside of school; however, we need to figure out a way to
explain to the child that in school we have to be respectful and be okay with working with all kinds of
different kids.
Then explain to the student in a similar manner as the classroom. Involving parents in explaining
their reasons and why being at school is a little different.

Solution
3. Discussion with the Entire
Class
The next day discuss with students how,
though everyone may have different
beliefs (in relation with God and
religion) we also have many similar
beliefs (being nice to others, doing your
best, etc). These could also be included
in classroom rules.

Affecting the Lesson

This Scenario would affect the lesson by:
Cliques may form from biases, so the teacher may
need to assign groups or partners instead of
choosing their own partners
As a part of the solution, the teacher will need to teach
the class about diversity and different religions
Student wouldnt be working with group, which not
only affects him but also affects groups ability to
complete their project.

Implications
Student has formed bias towards other
religions from parents beliefs/rules at home.
Student may have also misinterpreted parents
intentions

What are some of the possible ramifications if the situation

is not addressed in some way?
Student wont want to work in
group/do group project, therefore
not learning what he/she needs to
learn. Also, may affect other
students, hurt feelings, etc. Could
cause students to build bias towards
mormon kid (or whatever religion
child is) and towards the childs
religion it
