The masthead is located at the top of the

magazine below an advertisement for a festival.

The font used looks quite rustic and destroyed as
it has cracks in it. The font used for the masthead
also goes with the rock genre because it may
denote loud noises, which may lead to things
breaking, e.g. glass smashing when there is a
loud noise. The name of the magazine is called
Kerrang! and it has an explanation mark at the
end of it which may also connote a loud noise
and shouting. The font used is serif and is quite
bold. The masthead is written in a red font and
this follows the main colour scheme of the
magazine. The main colours used are red, yellow,
black and white. The colour red used for the
masthead may denote a feel of danger and
power.

Located on the top of the magazine selling point of the magazine, which is
also a strapline. This feature helps to sell the magazine as it includes
features about whats in it. The magazine offers a 10-page review about
Reading and Leeds festival. It also includes onstage action and backstage
gossip about the festival. This is a good selling point as some of the readers
may not have been to the festival and they could then read about it. The
background of the strapline follows the mise-en-scene of the colour scheme
as it is yellow, and the words Reading & Leads' are in a bold, red font
which represent the dangerous rock genre. Below that is a small black
banner which features subheadings about the topic which are in yellow
writing. This stands out against the black banner as its bright. There are
also smaller pictures of rock artists on the side of the main strapline.

Located below the masthead is a puff, which

in this case is a yellow bubble. Inside the
puff it says; Unseen Nirvana- Lost photos
appear!. This would attract the target
audience because they would like the band
Nirvana and would want to see the lost
pictures of them. It is almost like a bribe to
entice the readers. The word unseen in the
puff is the colour red, which stands out
against the yellow background and the word
also has a bold effect to it. The bands name
Nirvana is in black and has a sans serif and
bold effect to it. The words below Nirvanas
name is quite thin.

These images located in the lower left corner

are called secondary images. They advertise
posters that are in the magazine of famous
rock artists such as Paramore, Green Day,
Waterparks and MCR. This is a feature that
would attract the target audience because
they would want posters of their favourite
rock artists. The secondary images in the
magazines will want people to purchase the
magazines as there could also be
information related to the rock artists in
there.

Located at the bottom of the magazine is a feature that lets

people know about the 674 new listed gigs. The number 674
is in a bold yellow font and the listed gigs is in a thin white
font. This will catch the target audiences eyes as they will
want to know about new concerts. Next to it, there is a red
box that says Must-read reviews, which is in a bold white
font and this catches the readers eyes and makes them want
to purchase the magazine to find out about; Twin Atlantic,
Against Me!, Led Zeppelin and more. These words are in
white, bold fonts and stand out against the khaki of the
mains trousers. They would be intrigued to purchase the
magazine to find out more about their rock idols and heroes.
Located on the sides of these words are small yellow
diamonds, which are a nice added detail to show the next
names.

The use of mise-en-scene of the

background is white, which sounds
quite plain. However all of the
codes and conventions used on
the page make is more interesting
and so do the red, yellow and
black colours used on the front
page. The main image takes up
most of the front cover space.

The main image of the magazine front cover is of three

rock artists who have come together to come on tour. They
have various different expressions on their faces which all
connote something different. For example, the man on the
far left has his mouth opened and almost looks a little bit
shocked. The man in the middle is looking directly at the
readers, this is a use of direct address. The man on the far
right is looking to his left at the other two men with and
almost has an extremely slight frown on his face. The man
in the middle has his arm around the other two men and
this represents friendship. All of the men are wearing black
t-shirts and the colour black represents rock as a whole
genre, it also represents darkness and power. The man on
the far right also has tattoos up his arm and this is part of
mise-en-scene as most rock artists have tattoos. The shot
type used is a medium long shot as you can see from their
knees and up.
Located around the left side of the magazine is normal cover
lines. This cover line says; Of Mice & Men. This font used for
this cover line is black and bold, which makes it stand out
against the white background. This is a good colour choice to
use as it will catch the target audiences eye. Below the words
Of Mice & Men, it says Probed by you!. This is all in capital
letters but the font used for this is skinny and serif. There
are also two more normal cover lines used on this front cover
which are of the same font types and colours.

In the terminal area of the magazine, there is a

barcode which is a normal convention of magazines
as they all have one. There is also the magazines
name in a red banner, and the font used is white for
the name. Located next to the name is the issue
number of the magazine so that people know what
number it is. Above the actual barcode, there is the
magazines issue date which is 10/9/16 and there is
also the British price, which is 2.50 and the
Australian price which is $7.50. The barcode also has
the magazines website on it so that the readers will
know where to find more of the latest rock gossip
from. They may also be intrigued and want to buy
more magazines from Kerrang!.

The main image takes up almost all

of the contents page. It is of a man
singing, and he is holding a small
guitar. He is wearing a floral jacket
and a white shirt underneath which is
white. The singer is also wearing
white sunglasses. He is not looking at
the camera, which may suggest that
he is looking at the audience that he
is performing to. The shot type that
has been used is a mid shot, as you
can see from his waist up. The man
who is singing is performing at a
festival and is singing into a
microphone. He has a facial
expression of being focussed and into
what he is doing. The man represents
the people who are performing at the
festival.

The overall impression of the contents page

is that is has a nice, individual layout and it
makes things easier to find.

On this the far right side of the

magazine, there is the actual contents
page. There are subheadings which
read: news, features, posters, reviews
and gigs. The subheadings are in a
yellow box which relate back to the
colour scheme and the subheadings are
in a black, bold and serif font. Next to
the subheadings, there are smaller
words which are orange and say on the
cover, this is a helpful feature as
people are able to find things that were
on the front cover more easily. Below
the subheadings there are the page
numbers which are bold and black.
There are also the details about what is
on the pages and how to find them.
This is a normal code and convention
that magazine producers follow and the
audience will be more attracted to the
magazine as they will be able to find
things more easily.

There is a grid noticeable on the far right corner due

to it being particularly straight. The main image takes
up two of the grids in the image as it is quite big.
This shows that the width of the first two columns are
thicker than the last one.

Located in the top right corner, there is the title; contents,

which has been printed in a white font . It is big but not
extremely big. The contents title also has a very thick and
black stroke put onto it which makes it stand out a lot on the
page. On the contents title, there are various types of
iconography that have been used whilst designing it. For
example, there is a snake, letters, megaphone, bones and a
skulls head. This all connotes to the rock genre as they are all
objects that are related to it. The images of the objects are
white and they have a grey/black tint to them. They also have
faint spots on the outlines of them.

Below the contents title, there is the issue number and

dateline. These features are above a tilted yellow box
and the issue number font is above it in a bold, orange
font. This stands out against the yellow background
because the orange is a slightly dark colour. The yellow
background follows the main colour scheme for the
magazine. The dateline is located next to this and is in
a bold, black font. This stands out against the yellow
background and is also part of the main colour scheme
for the magazine.
Located in this area, there is an editors message.
The message is above a black, square box. There is
also an image of the editor on the side of the text,
so the readers will get to know who he is. The editor
has written a message for the readers so that they
can get a feel of whats inside of the magazine . He
has also signed his name at the bottom right of the
message, so that the readers know what his name
is.

This subheading anchors to the main

image as it is telling people the review
about the festival, the image anchors
because the person has performed at the
festival. The subheading is in a bold, white
font which stands out against the mans
floral jacket. This font type can catch
peoples eyes because it is bold. There is
also a page number next to it.

In the terminal area, there is a secondary

image of a man hugging a woman. He looks
like a rock artist due to him wearing a black
bandana and a black t-shirt. There is bold,
white writing which says Of Mice & Men and
has a page number next it, it says in smaller
writing below it Austin CarSMILE more like!.
This is below the page subheadings and
details. This would make the audience want to
go to that page to find out why he is happy
and they will find it easier to find the page
because it says the number. The image that is
used also helps to bring attention to it and as
it is in the terminal area, people will remember
it.

The main image takes up both sides of the double

page spread, and is of three rock artists. The artists
are also on the front cover of the magazine, and this
double page spread is about them. They are all
sitting on the floor and look as if they are leaning
against a concrete wall which is grey. The whole
mise-en-scene of the background is grey which
shows that they are at a skate park, hence the image
anchoring with the headline of the article. The band
members are all wearing black t-shirts like they are
on the front cover, the colour black connotes power,
death and also mystery. The colour black is also the
main colour that denotes the rock genre, as this is
the colour that almost all rock artists would wear.
The colour black also represents all rock artists. The
band member that is located on the left is also
wearing skater shoes, which also anchors to the
headline of the article. The shoes that the member is
wearing may also appeal to the readers as they
might then want shoes like that. Iconography has
been used in the main image of this article by the
middle member of the band wearing a watch on his
wrist and there is also an image of a skateboard by
him. The skateboard also anchors to the headline of
the article because it reads Make America skate
again, which is clearly why the board is there. The
body language of the band members is quite chilled
out and this is presented by the way they are at a
skate park, and are chilling out. The man on the left
has his legs out which also shows that they are
chilled. On the main image, the members on the
right and the left look quite calm and relaxed,
however the man in the middle has a slightly stern
and confused look on his face. The main image is a
direct mode of address, as all of the members would
be looking at the readers and this is a feature that
has been used so that they can almost
communicate with the audience. The type of shot
used to create this image would be a wide shot, as it
features the background and the bodies of the main
subjects.

Located above the headline,

there is a small feature which
says cover story, which allow
the readers to easily recognise
the main feature of the article.
This is in a small but bold font
which allows readers to notice
it clearly.

The headline of this article is located on the left side of the double page spread
and is quite large. The colours used are white, black and red and these are used
as it represents the American flag colours. The colours used also anchor with the
word America through the use of colours. There are two different fonts used
whilst creating the main headline, one is serif and the other is sans-serif. The
fonts are quite bold and the word skate is a funky font, which looks almost like
graffiti. This is presented as graffiti by the way it almost fades onto one of the
band members knee and arm. You are able to tell that this graffiti as this is what
almost all graffiti looks like. The word skate also anchors with the skateboard
that is located below the headline. The words that are in the white and blue
fonts also stand out due to them being quite big and bold. On the double page
spread, most of the letters fade onto the background which creates a rustic
effect that would appeal to the readers eyes as it is quite a unique feature.

My overall impression of this page is that it looks quite good due

to the layout it follows and the information is short, snappy and
straight to the point. The colours used as part of the mise-enscene against the background work well together and make it
have a fun but interesting twist. The double page spread doesnt
follow a clear rule of thirds as things on the page are tilted and
in various places. However, overall the double page spread does
look good and would fit with a rock theme.

Located in the bottom left corner of the double

page spread is the main article. The article is
placed in a white box and the font used is small
and serif. It looks quite neat and orderly in the box
which would attract readers as it looks
aesthetically pleasing. The colour of the actual
article font is black which stands out against the
white box. The article has a drop cap at the start of
it in the colour blue, which is the same colour blue
that has been used in the headline. This drop cap
stands out against the white background and
would catch the readers eye. The target audience
would like to read this article because it is based
on their favourite rock artists. The box of the
article is on top of the middle mans shoe and
touches the skateboard because the box is slightly
tilted.
The skateboard is the secondary image
on the double page spread and this
anchors to the headline due to the
reference skate in it.

Below the headline of the article, there is a subheading

which gives the readers a little bit of information about
the main article. It briefly mentions about the band
members and how Kerrang! joined the members to see
the greatest punk tour of all time. This gives the reader a
short and brief insight of to what the article is about. The
font used is quite thin but wide and is serif. There are the
name of the bands that the men are from and the band
names are in a bold, thick serif front. This would catch
and appeal to the target audiences eye. Below the
subheading, it mentions who wrote the article and who
took the main image, so then these small details can be
seen by the readers. The main subheading states that it
would be the greatest punk tour of all time which would
also intrigue people to read the magazine article.

Something that all of the magazine features have in common

is that they all have the colours white and red in them, which
are part of the colour scheme of Kerrang! These colours are
used as part of mise-en-scene and they are colours that stand
out and appeal to the readers eyes. Another thing they have
in common is that they all feature a main image, which is an
important factor because then members of the target
audience will want to read and purchase the magazine. For
this magazine, the front cover and double page spread
feature images of members of a band that are going on tour
together and the contents page has an image of an artists
performing at a festival. Main images are something that
almost every magazine will feature. All of the magazines
feature bold and big fonts which are used to catch the readers
eyes and to make things stand out to them more, this makes
it easier for them to find things. They also all have a main title
on them so the readers know what page they are looking at.
