It is situated northwest
of the state of South
Carolina.

The Piedmont Region

This region is at the


foothills of the
mountains with many
rolling hills and valleys.

It is the largest region in


SC, and is directly under
the Blue Ridge Region.

The Sand Hills Region

The ancient seacoast, has flat land


with sandy soil that is not good for
growing crops.

This region is primarily in the midland

South Carolina, it is also very
centrally located in the state.

Outer Coastal Plain

Close to the sea, this region is


full of swamps and marsh land
which flow into the ocean.

This area is flat and broken up


into many rivers and streams,
it borders the eastern-most
Coastal Zone.

This region, or zone, stretches for 10 miles


inland from the Atlantic Ocean.

It is home to many barrier-islands, which


protect the coast from erosion that comes
with storms and high tides.

Major Cities of South Carolina


Columbia is the capital city of South
Carolina. It is marked on the map
with a star . It is located in the
Sandhills, which is very central to
the state.
Charleston is located in the lower
portion of the Coastal Zone and has
many ports for shipping and
importing goods, it is marked with a

Greenville is located in the Piedmont
region, and many people who live
here enjoy kayaking and white water
rafting on the rivers, also marked

Major River Basins

The Pee Dee Basin is the largest


and furthest North, extending all
the way in to Virginia. Rainfall in
this basin flows to the Pee Dee
River and enters the Atlantic
Ocean at Winyah Bay.

The Santee Basin also extends in


to North Carolina. Major rivers
such as the Saluda River, Broad
River, Catawba River eventually
merge into the Santee River before
reaching the coast.

The Edisto/South Carolina Coastal


Basin is different from the other
basins of South Carolina. First, it is
much smaller and only extends to
the edge that separates the
Coastal Plain from the Piedmont. It
is entirely within the state of South
Carolina.
