Today We Will Learn

Explain how the water cycle impacts the composition of water
from diferent sources.
You will create your own hydroponic system

Water Testing Instructions

1.Each group will be given a test strip
2.Dip the strip into your water sample
3.Record results on your worksheet
4.Interpret results as a class
Iron: Dip for 2 seconds, remove with pad face up, shake once to remove excess water
Copper: Swirl 10 times, remove with pad face up
6 test: Dip for 2 seconds, remove with pad face up, shake once to remove excess water

Infiltration
Water from collections soaks
into the soil and moves
through rocks, cracks, and
pore spaces.

Evaporation
Water in the liquid state is pulled out of the ground, oceans and lakes
and converted to vapor which is then brought to the clouds.

Transpiration
The way water evaporates through
plants.
Plants absorb water from the soil
through infiltration.
Transpiration occurs so water from
plants can go back into the water
cycle.

Condensation
Water vapor in the atmosphere (clouds) turns into water in a liquid
state leading to precipitation.

Water Cycle
The journey water takes as it circulates from land to the sky and back
again.

The Sun
The sun drives the water cycle.
It provides energy & heat.
Heat melts water & leads to
evaporation.

Drought
What causes a drought?
How does this impact the land?
How does this impact you?

How Can We Conserve Water

At Kurn Hattin Right Now?

Hydroculture
The method of growing plants without soil

Hydroponics
Uses mineral nutrient solutions in a water solvent.

Build Your Own Hydroponic System!

Materials:
Water bottle
Paper clips
Rocks
Fertilizer spike
Plant
Cotton strip
Scissors

Directions
1.Cut water bottle
2.Attach paper clips
3.Place cotton string
4.Add rocks
5.Place plant
6.Add water

Aquaponics
A system of aquaculture that uses waste
produced by farmed fish to supply nutrients
for plants grown hydroponically.
This process helps purify the water.

Why Would We Use Hydroculture?

Plants grow 50% faster compared
to soil growing
Eliminates the need for pesticides
Reduces use of fertilizers
Same yield in of the space
Not dependant on the weather
Can produce yields several times

How Do We Grow Most of Our Food?

Most of our food is still grown conventionally which is why soil is
important.

In Summary
We learned how the composition of water and its taste can be
impacted the source.
We learned new methods of grow food using only water
We learned how to incorporate fish into grow sustainable food
