Dermatophytes in Patients Attending a Tertiary Hospital in Addis
Ababa, Ethiopia
Resumed By
Setiani Imaningtias
NIDM 23. 37. 912. 2011

Introduction
2025% worlds population infected by
mycoses superficialis
Keratinophilic
fungi
(Dermatophytes)

Trichophyton,
Microsporum,
dan
Epidermophyton
High morbidity, causing loss of working days,
and treatment
Prevalence of Dermatophytosis has significantly
reduced in many developed nations

Introduction
Dermatophytosis are mostly infected specific
population that is student.
Ethiopia is one of developing nation locate in the
tropic with wet humid climate
Low awareness of dermatophytosis by physician
and general population

Objective
This study aim is to identify actual magnitude of
dermatophytosis as well as the spectrum of its
etiological agents among the general population

Method
Sample
Total 305 samples
September 2014October 2015
Dermatology Department of Tikur Anbessa
Teaching Hospital

Method
Sample Collection
Infected area was cleaned with 70% ethanol
Skin and nail samples were collected by
scrapping with sterile blade
Dull broken hairs with forceps
Put the samples on the sterile folded papers
Labeled with age, sex, date of collection, code
of patient, and location of infection
Taken to Microbiology Laboratory

Method
Culture and Microscopic Examination
Samples was mounted of 10% KOH on a slide
After 5 minutes examine under x10 and
x40 power magnification
Another portion of samples was cultured on to
Sabourauds
dextrose
agar
containing
Chloramphenicol
with
or
without
Cycloheximide
All inoculated plates were incubated at
inverted position for 46 weeks at 2530o C
aerobically.

Method
Culture and Microscopic Examination
Culture plates examined twice a week
Colonies suspected of dermatophytes were
subcultured into potato dextrose agar (PDA)

Result
Samples Characteristics
97 (31.8%) males
208 (68.2%) females
Age of study subjects range from 180 years

Discussion
Prevalence rate of culture proven dermatophytic
infection was realtively low, compared to earlier
local survey.
Prevalence rate of KOH proven dermatophyte
infection ranging from 53.1% to 100%
Rate of culture ranging from 52.2% to 67.1%
Disparity in different studies could result from
differences
in
lifestyle,
socioeconomic
conditions, risk factor, and environmental.

Discussion
This study shows that more female were
affected by dermatophytes than males. Earlier
studies also indicated the same result.
Predominant clinical manifestations were vary in
many studies before.
In this study shows that all of age group were
susceptible to dermatophytosis and it appeared
to be more common in adult group as they are
physically active outdoors.

Conclusion
Prevalence of microscopic and culture confirmed
dermatophytic infections in the study was high
Tinea unguium was the dominant clinical
manifestation
72.3% etiological agents was T. violaceum, T.
mentagrophytes, and T. tonsurans
T. violaceum was in the highest rate
To obtain a true representation of the overall
disease pattern of the country more such types
of this study should be conducted.
