COMMON PROBLEMS,CAUSES

&POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS IN COMPOSITE

RESTORATIONS

poor isolation of operating

area

No rubber dam or leaking rubber dam

Inadequate cotton roll isolation
Careless technique
Preparation so deep gingivally it cannot be
isolated

Solution:
o Better technique
o Use of matrix to help isolation
o Repeat bonding procedure(if area is
contaminated)

White line or halo line around

enamel margin
Traumatic contouring or finishing
Inadequate etching or bonding
High-intensity light curing,resulting in
excessive polymerization stresses

solution

Re-etch,prime and bond the area

Consevatively remove the fault and re-restore
Atraumatic finishing(light pressure)
Use slow-start polymerization technique

voids
Mixing of self cured composites
Spaces between increments during
insertion
Tacky composite pulling away from
preparation during insertion.

Solution
o Repair by preparing the area and rerestoring

Weak or missing proximal

contact(cl ll,lll,lV)

Inadequate contoured matrix band

Inadequate wedging
Matrix band is not in contact proximaly during insertion
Matrix band too thick

Solution
o Properly contour the matrix band
o Have matrix in contact with adjacent tooth
o Use of matrix system that places matrix only around the
proximal surface to be restored
o Use of specialy designed ,triangular light- curing tips to
hold the matrix against the adjacent tooth

Incorrect shade

Inappropriate operator lighting while selecting shade

Selecting shade after tooth is dried
Shade tab not matching the actual composite shade
Wrong shade selected

solution:

o Use of natural light

o Select the shade before isolating the tooth
o Preoperatively place some of the selected shade on
tooth and cure(then remove)
o Dont shine operative light directly on the area

Poor retention

Inadequate preparation form

Contamination of operating area
Poor bonding technique
Intermingling of bonding materials from different
system

Solution:

o

Appropriate bevel or flares

Keep the area isolated
Follow the manufacture direction
Dont intermingling bonding materils from different
system.

Contouring and finishing problem

Injuring adjacent unprepared tooth

Overcontouring the restoration
Undercontouring therestoration
Ditching the cementum
Dealing with difficult to see the margins

Solution
o Be careful with rotary instruments not harming adjacent tooth
o Create embrasure to match the adjacent tooth embrasure
form
o Remember outline of prepation
o View the restoration from all angles as it is contoured
o Use properly shape contouring system
