Frequency Dividers
The frequency divider is one of the building
blocks of a PLL frequency synthesizer that
operates at high frequency. It converts the
oscillator high output frequency to a lower
frequency which can be compared to a
reference source.
So, the divider can see the full frequency
range of a PLL from several hundred kHz to
several GHz.
For a low power design, it is desirable to
use an asynchronous divider structure to
minimize the amount of circuitry at high
frequencies.
The dual-modulus approach achieves such
a structure, and has been successfully
used in many high speed, low power
designs.
