Book overview:

The book Mayday! Asking for help in times of need, written by Klaver M. Nora is divided
into two parts. Part one of the book begins by briefly introducing the steps of the mayday
process followed by why we do not ask people for help and reasons why we should ask.
Moreover, part two of the book explores how and when we should ask for help. Additionally,
the seven-step process of asking for help is fully explained in these chapters. In addition to
the steps, the author includes the process and outcome of individuals from different lifestyles
which help us see the importance of how asking for help can change a situation. For example,
Klaver shares with us, in step three, Take a Leap, the story of Walter, a man who felt he
needed to do everything himself in order to appear organized and professional. However,
Walters boss asked him to change his management style overnight. In fewer words, Walter
learned to have faith (which is one of the mayday steps) by letting his team help him plan the
meeting. Overall, Walter learned that by asking his team for help and having faith his problem
came to a solution. Moreover, Klaver also provides coaching in the book by including
exercises or thought questions within each step of the mayday process. The book closes with
a summary of the seven steps in asking for help.

Discussion of three main themes:

The following points are an explanation of the three main themes of the book.
Do not go against the flow of life. That means not ignoring or denying the
fact that we as humans need the help of others.
Always being thankful for what we have even if we can only see the bad
things. if we look further, we will realize the many blessings, which may
have a positive effect on our relationship with others.
Fear will always be present when the thought of asking for help comes to
mind; however, learning to overcome fear brings great things to our life
because we will be able to let other people into our life to help us.

How can not going against the flow of

life be applied to the workplace?
At work, we should not go against the flow with the idea that
we do not need anyone else because of unexpected obstacles that
could result. For example, these obstacles could be projects from
our boss that might need to be finished in a short time frame.
Therefore, there might come a time when we cannot move on
without the help of another person. Therefore, we should not go
against the flow with the thought that we can do everything on our
own, but give ourselves the opportunity and let someone help us.
Moreover, this will even help reduce excessive stress caused by
going against the fact that sometimes we do need the help of
others. In conclusion, let others apply their skills in our life.

How can being thankful apply to the

workplace?
Always being thankful at the workplace
will enable us to enjoy positive experiences
while we reinforce our social unions with our
coworkers that can then lead to new
relationships that expand our list of people we
can ask for help in times of need. Therefore,
thanking those who assist us at work with
small or big things is a way we can always be
thankful at work.

How can overcoming fear be applied to

the workplace?
Do not be afraid to ascend to a new work position or
even another job because of the fear that we might not
know how to develop the job duties because we do not
have the experience even though we do have the
knowledge. However, we should take that step
considering that there will always be people who can help
us, if we ask them for help. Therefore, taking on new
positions or new jobs is overcoming fear in the
workplace.

Recommendation:
Would I recommend this book? I would highly recommend it. Why? First, I feel
this book is for anyone. Some people may feel this book is just for those people
who are always intimidated when faced with the need of asking others for help.
However, I recommend that if we feel this way, we reconsider. The reason is that
we all come across or will come across a moment in our personal or work life
where we dont know how to ask for help, who to ask, or feel others dont care
enough to want to help. Therefore, we try to get rid of every thought that
constantly reminds us we need help. However, sometimes we find ourselves so
stuck in something that we cannot move on unless we ask for help. Therefore, this
is why I would highly recommend this book to anyone; because in this book
anyone can learn how to get past the fear or negative thoughts that tag along with
the idea of asking for help with help from these simple seven steps.

Thank you for your
