What is Trust?
Firm belief in the reliability, truth, or ability
of someone or something.
An arrangement whereby a person (a
trustee) holds property as its nominal
owner for the good of one or more
beneficiaries.

Trustworthiness
Trustworthiness is a
human quality and virtue.
The virtue of being
worth of trust.
Trustworthiness: enable
others to believe in us
and to rely on us without
reservation or fear.

Trustworthiness in a
Leader
A trust worthy leader will have the following traits:
They themselves will be skilled at trusting, because
trusting and trustworthiness enhance each other
They will be good at collaboration and the tools of
influence
They will operate from a clear set of values and
principles, because opportunistic or selfish motives
are clearly seen and rejected
They are likely to be more intrinsically than
extrinsically motivated, and more likely to use
intrinsic motivations with others

Trustworthiness in an
Employee
A trustworthy employee has the following traits:
Honesty
In communications with clients and colleagues.
Consistency
Telling the truth to every person in the office.
Dependability
Reliable, gets the job done.

IN ISLAM
An important part of the noble Islamic character is being trustworthy.
Prophet Muhammad was known, even before his Prophethood to
be Al Amin (the trustworthy one).
The meaning of amanah is trustworthiness, or, it is something or
someone left to someone to protect or keep. The opposite of
amanah is betrayal or even treason. That is, to fail to keep the trust
or amanah in the way the person who left it expected or wanted.
Those who are faithfully true to their amanah (all the duties which
God has ordained, honesty, moral responsibility and trusts, etc.) and
to their covenants...these indeed are the inheritors. Who shall
inherit Paradise. And dwell therein forever (Quran 23:8, 23:10-11)

IN ISLAM

God says, There are three people whom I shall be their opponent

on the Day of Judgment: A man who was given something in My


Name and then betrays; A man who sells-off a free man (as a slave)
and consumes the price; and A man who hires a labourer, makes
use of his service then does not give him his wages. (Saheeh AlBukhari).
Verily, God does command you to render back your Trusts to whom
they are due. (Quran 4:58)

A hypocrite is known by three traits: When he speaks, he lies;


when he promises, he reneges; when he is entrusted, he cheats (or
embezzles). (Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Saheeh Muslim)

IN ISLAM
If your brother mentions something to you in private,
then walks away, it is an ammanah(trust) even if he
didnt instruct you not to inform anyone. (Umar ibn al
khattab)

Trustworthiness
Trustworthiness is achieved by developing values.

A value or quality is something humans beings consider extremely


important and desirable.

The following values or qualities help us develop trustworthiness:


honesty, integrity, reliability, and loyalty.

Honesty
Honesty is a value that helps us convey the
truth as best as we know it.

Honesty help us avoid communication that is


misleading or deceiving.

Honesty
There are different
ways to build
honesty, these are:
A. Truthfulness
B. Sincerity
C. Candor

Truthfulness
Truthfulness is: the obligation to speak what we know is
true.
Truthfulness is: the intent (aim) to speak or convey the
truth
Example: Half-truths are a way to deceived someone by
mixing something true with something that is not true.

What are some of the most common halftruth teenagers or adults use to get out of
trouble?

Sincerity
Sincerity is the commitment of an individual to be truthful.

Ex: A person makes a habit to avoid statements or


actions that are misleading.

People that are not sincere, rely on lying and falsehood in


their relationship and interaction with others.

and dishonesty?

Candor
The ability to be straightforward.
What you see is what you get, type of
person.
A person that is not afraid to speak the truth
or demand the truth.

Who are the people in your life that you
consider to be straight forward?
There are people that tell you what you
want to hear and there are others that tell
you what you need to hear. Which of
these two would you prefer?

Honesty
Truthfulness, sincerity and candor require that a person be honest
in words and in conduct.

An honest person will not steal, cheat, commit fraud, or trickery,


because these actions are dishonest in themselves, are antivalues.

A dishonest person deceives in order to take advantage of others.


Dishonesty is a violation of trust, justice, and truth.

Integrity
The word integrity
comes from the word
integer, meaning
wholeness
A person that has integrity is
a person that makes sound
decisions from situation to
situation.

Integrity
A person of integrity is a person that
does not compromise his or her
values in order to achieve a purpose
or obtain a benefit.
A person of integrity is the same in
public or alone.
This is called
character.
People of integrity are admired and
trusted because of their resolve, inner
strength and transparency.

a different way when you are alone?

same way in private as we do in public?

Integrity
To develop integrity a person has to develop:
A. Self-knowledge (knowledge of self)
B. Self-Reflection
(The ability to reason)
C. Self-Control
(The ability to control ones desires and impulses)

The four enemies of


integrity
Integrity can be destroyed by the following behaviors:
A. Self-interest
(things we want)
B. Selfishness
(things we dont want to share)
C. Self-deception
(A refusal to accept the truth, playing mind games)

D. Self-righteousness
(Doing what I think is right instead of doing what is right)
