WORLD MAP

Antelope Canyon
Antelope Canyon is a small
but exquisitely beautiful
geological formation in
northern Arizona.

It is not a national or state

park and is often overlooked
by many tourists visiting the
area.

But its unsurpassed beauty is

breathtaking.

A long time ago, herds of

pronghorn antelope roamed
freely in the canyon, which
explains the canyon's English
name.

The Antelope Canyon is

divided into the Upper
Antelope Canyon and the
Lower Antelope Canyon.

UPPER ANTELOPE CANYON

The Navajo name for Upper

Antelope Canyon is Tse'
bighanilini, which means "the
place where water runs
through rocks."

LOWER ANTELOPE CANYON

Lower Antelope Canyon is
called Hasdestwazi by the
Navajos, or "spiral rock
arches."

REASON FOR
THE
GEOLOGICAL
FORMATION

Antelope Canyon was formed by

erosion of Navajo Sandstone,
primarily due toflash
floodingand secondarily due to
othersub-aerialprocesses.

Rainwater, especially
duringmonsoon season, runs
into the extensive basin above
the slot canyon sections, picking
up speed and sand as it rushes
into the narrow passageways.

Over time the passageways eroded

away, making the corridors deeper
and smoothing hard edges in such
a way as to form characteristic
'flowing' shapes in the rock.
