WHAT IS NOUN?

GENDER

Men, boys, and male animals are masculine

Brother, uncle, nephew, lord, duke, cock.

Women, girls, and female animals are feminine


Sister, aunt, niece, lady, duchess, hen.

Most nouns have the same form for masculine and feminine

Parent, child, cousin, author, painter, artist, rider, driver.

PLURALS
With ending o, or, ss, sh, ch, or x form their plural by adding es.

The plural of a
noun is usually
made by
adding s to
the singular.
Example :
dogs, days,
houses, truths.

Tomatoes, kisses, brushes, watches, boxes.

With ending y following a consonant form, drop the y and add ies.
Exceptions

Babies, ladies, countries, flies.

Twelve nouns ending in f or fe, drop the f or fe and add ves.


Wives, lives, knives, wolves, selves, calves, shelves, leaves, loaves, thieves, sheaves, halves.

PLURALS
A few names of fish or animals do not change in the plural
Sheep, deer, salmon, trout, fish, grouse.
The plural of a
noun is usually
made by
adding s to
the singular.
Example :
dogs, days,
houses, truths.

Few noun form their plural by vowel change.


Exceptions
Men, women, feet, mice, teeth.
Words which retain their original Greek or Latin forms, according to the rules of Greek
or Latin.
Agenda, agendum ; memoranda, memorandum ; data, datum ; basis, bases ; axis, axes.

NOTE :
THE PLURAL OF CHILD IS CHILDREN.

POSSESSIVE NOUNS

THE CASE ENDINGS FOR THE POSSESSIVE CASE :

s (apostrophe-s) is used with singular noun and plural nouns not ending in s.

Toms book ; the boys room ; the mans hat ; the mens hat.

A simple apostrophe () is used with plural nouns ending in s.

The girls school ; the dogs kennels.

Note : you can form the possessive case of a singular noun ending in s, by adding an apostrophe () alone or by
adding an apostrophe and s. Example : the buss seats are comfortable ; the bus seats are comfortable.
