Compliance and
Compliance- Are
you going to follow your doctors
Adherence
orders?
The CDC defines it as a patients
following of providers orders
passive
timing,
dosage, and frequency of
medication-taking during the prescribed
recommendation with respect to
length of time
Non-Adherence
fu n facts
-20-30% of prescriptions are
never
filled
-Nearly 50% of medications are
not continued as prescribed
Adherence continues to decrease
after the first 6 months
-The World Health Organization (WHO)
estimates that by 2020, 157 million
Americans will have at least one
chronic condition that requires
medication therapy- Almost half the
population
-Medication nonadherence costs
approximately $2000 per patient in
physician visits annually
Factors Relating to
Medication
Noncompliance
1. Issues regarding the health-care system
and/or the health-care team
2. The patient himself
3. The patients prescribed treatment/therapy
4. The condition of the patient
5. Social/economic factors
30-50% of treatment
Medication
Noncompliance
In terven tion s
-90 day supply of medication and allowing for
automatic prescription renewal (CDC, 2013)
-Medication home delivery
-A daily medication reminder (CDC, 2013). This
could be in the form of an alarm or app on the
patients phone
-Another good reminder for patients is that their
practitioners, nurses, and pharmacists are very
valuable resources. If patients have questions or
confusion regarding their medication dosing, side
effects, or drug interactions, they should seek the
consultation of a pharmacist or health care provider
