Importance of Surface Texture

The condition of a surface may be important from

many points of view. These include appearance, colour,

corrosion resistance, wear resistance, hardness,
absorption characteristics, lubrication, fatigue
resistance, and initial tolerance.
Some of these properties are influenced by the
roughness of the surface, or those irregularities and
departure from perfect smoothness that result from the
method of forming the surface.

Primary & Secondary Texture

The true surface roughness is called primary

texture and is caused by the action of cutting

tool used to produce the surface.
The waviness is called secondary texture
caused by imperfection in the cutting tool or
machine, such as vibration or badly trued
grinding wheel.
