K-SADS PL,

AN INTRODUCTION
-Waleed Sami

KSADS
KSADS was developed from SADS
Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia
Designed to administer to the pediatric population, around

6-18 years old

The purpose of KSADS is to collect psychiatric diagnostic

criteria and understand symptoms, among the pediatric

population

KSADS Psychometrics
KSADS is a viable to diagnose and assess psychiatric

illness currently, in the past, or perhaps in the future,

(Ambrosini, 2000)

Furthermore, KSADS has high interrater reliability

(Polanczyk, 2003).

KSADS Psychometrics (cont)

KSADS

scores rate very highly on validity and reliability scales when it comes to
psychiatric diagnoses (Kaufman, 1997).

It has proven to be reliable when testing pre-schoolers (Birmaher, 2008)

Furthermore,

there is evidence that there is a high amount of divergent reliability

when it comes to diagnosing adolescent depression (Lauth, 2010).

KSADS Multicultural Considerations

KSADS has proven to be very multicultural and competent

It has been translated into over 16 different languages

with proven reliability (Hersen, 2004).

Icleand
Iceland has achieved rater reliability, and translation has

proven successful (Lauth, 2008).

Spanish Translation
The Spanish version of the KSADS has proven reliable as

well (Ulloa, 2006).

Farsi (Iran) Translation

The Farsi version of KSADS has been proven reliable by

a team of psychiatrists in Iran. (Ghanizadeh, 2006)

Individuals with Disabilities

Research is showing that individuals with disabilities can

be appropriately accommodated whilst taking the KSADS

(Hersen, 2004)

Limitations
Time required for Administration, (Hersen, 2004)

Specialized Training, (Hersen, 2004)

Western imposition of psychiatry and symptomology

(biomedical model)

Conclusion

KSADS is an effective tool to screen for psychiatric

symptoms and has proven multicultural applications along

with reliability and validity.
