COMA
is characterized by the total absence of arousal and of
awareness
Stevens RD., Bhardwaj A. Approach to the comatose patient. Crit Care Med.2006.

is a sleep-like state in which the patient makes no purposeful

response to the environment and from which he or she cannot
be aroused

Prognosis
Non-traumatic coma tends to carry a better prognosis
Survival & quality of life are highly dependent upon the
etiology on nontraumatic coma
Neurologic status at the time of presentation appears to be
predictive of patient outcome in cases of nontraumatic
coma
