Life Stages

Infancy 0-1
when born usually weighs 6-8 lbs, at the
end of the year it is about 21-24 lbs
Measures 18-22 inches
during infancy the start to be aware of
surroundings and make sounds
Newborns show excitement and towards
the end of infancy they show affection and
elation
Start to show emotion especially with their
caregiver

Early Childhood 1-6


By age 6 the average weight is 45lbs
and the average height is 46in
During early childhood kids learn
how to read and write
Start to learn to control their
emotions
Learn how to communicate better
with people

Late childhood 6-12

Average of 5-7lbs each year


2-3 inches each year
Start to engage in physical activity
Begin to understand more abstract concepts
More active thinking
Greater independence
Want the approval of others
Tend to be more group oriented

Adolescents
mental development involves increase of knowledge and sharpening of skills
learn to make decisions and take responsibility for their actions
physical development ranges between 12-20 years of age
physical changes occur most drastically in this stage
rapid increases of weight and height
muscle coordination does not advance as quickly which may lead to awkwardness or
clumsiness

emotional development in this stage they try to establish their identities and independence, usually comes out
uncertain and insecure

social development-

less time with family and more time with friends


they seek security in friend groups of their own age.
Towards the end of this stage they develop a more mature attitude and develop more adult

Early Adulthood 19-40


Ranges from 20-40 yrs. of age
Muscles are developed and motor coordination is at its peek.
Main child baring period

Mental development Formal education continues in his stage for many years
Deals with independence, making career choices, establishing an everyday life style,
selecting a spouse, starting a family, and establishing moral values.

Emotional development- involves preservation of of stability established in the


previous stages.
Involves a lot of emotional stress related to their career, marriage, family.
They find satisfaction in their achievements, taking responsibility for their actions,
and learn to accept criticism.

Social development Involves moving away from peer group and start associating with others who have
the same ambitions and interests regardless of their age.

Middle Adulthood 40-60


Ranges from 40-60 yrs. of age
Physical changes start to occur in these years such as:
hair turns gray and begins to thin
mental development mental ability increases
individuals have an understanding of life and the ability to cope with stress well
have more confidence in decision making process and analyzing situations
emotional development this stage can either be a stage of content satisfaction or a time of crisis.
This stage relies on the foundation set in previous stages
This may involve:
Fear of aging
Social development
Family relationships decline as children begin lives of their own and parents die

Late adulthood 65+


Physical 65 and up
skin becomes dry, wrinkled and thinner
brown or yellow spots
hair loses its luster and shine
cartilage between vertebrae thins and leads to
stooping of posture
a decline in function of the nervous system leads to
hearing loss, decreased visual acuity

mental development- some elderlys show a decrease


in earlier ages such as short term memory loss
Social: retirement can lead to loss of elf esteem. You
begin to have les contact with co workers and a
limited circle of friends.
