THERBLIGS
THE KEY TO SIMPLIFYING WORKS

To divided the job into smaller parts

Consist of 18 basic motions which were studied by using a
process chart and micro motion study which watched the
motions involved the slow picture camera and a stop watch
This to analyses the elements of the job in the micro
seconds.
By reducing the number of therbligs for any task, one
could increase the efficiency of the worker.

Therbligs could be identified and plotted

on Simultaneous Motion (simo) Charts.

ERGONOMICS
ERGONOMICS

Ergonomics is essentially fitting the workplace to the worker.

It involves the application of knowledge about human
capacities and limitations to the design of workplaces, jobs,
tasks, tools, equipment, and the environment.
The goal of ergonomics in the workplace is to prevent
injuries and illnesses (work-related musculoskeletal disorders
or WMDs) by reducing or eliminating worker exposure to
occupational hazards. These hazards include:
Awkward postures
Repetition
Force
Mechanical compression
Duration
Vibration
Temperature extremes

The Gilbreths pioneered

the use of devices, such
as adjustable chairs and
improved workstations, to
ease strain on the body
and reduce injuries

PURPOSE - The purpose of this article is to look at method study, as devised by the
Gilbreths at the beginning of the twentieth century, which found early application in
hospital quality assurance and surgical "best practice". It has since become a core activity in
all modern methods, as applied to healthcare delivery improvement programmes.

FINDINGS

- Healthcare method (saving time plus saving motion) study is best

practised as co-joint action learning activity "owned" by all "players" involved in the
re-engineering process. However, although process mapping is a key step forward, in
itself it is no guarantee of effective re-engineering. It is not even the beginning of the
end of the change challenge, although it should be the end of the beginning. What is
needed is innovative exploitation of method study within a healthcare organisational
learning culture accelerated via the Gilbreth Knowledge Flywheel.
