INTRODUCTION
Cellular manufacturing system
has been proved a vital approach
for batch and job shop
production systems. Group
technology has been an essential
tool for developing a cellular
manufacturing system.

GROUP TECHNOLOGY
It is a manufacturing philosophy in which similar parts are
identified and grouped together to take advantage of their
similarities in design and production.
It is applicable to wide variety of manufacturing situations. It
is more appropriate under the following conditions.
The plant currently uses traditional batch production and
a process type layout.
The parts can be grouped into part families.

THE TWO MAJOR TASKS TO

IMPLEMENT GT
Identifying the part families.
Rearranging production machines into
machine cells.

BENEFITS OF GT

It promotes standardization of tools, fixtures & setups.

Material handling Is reduced.
Process planning and production scheduling are simplified.
It reduces setup time & manufacturing lead time.
Work in process is reduced.
Higher quality work is accomplished using GT.

PART FAMILIES
A part family is the collection of parts that are
similar to either in geometric shapes and
size or in the processing steps required in
their manufacture.
The parts within a family are different, but
their similarities are close enough to merit
their inclusions as members of the part
family.

PRODUCTION FLOW ANALYSIS

VISUAL INSPECTION METHOD

It is the least sophisticated and least expensive method. it
involves the classification of parts into families by looking
at either the physical parts or their photographs and
arranging them into groups having similar features.
Although this method is generally considered the least
accurate of these three methods. This method is most time
consuming method.

PART CLASSIFICATION AND CODING

In this similarities among parts are identified these
similarities are related in a coding system.
Two categories of part similarities an be distinguished.
