Case Study : PE Assessment in

SAM Jeram

Introduction
Physical

Education (PE) is one of the


subjects taught in all the primary and
secondary schools in Malaysia.
PE plays a vital role in the growth and
overall development of students.
This case study will touch
on the
assessment and evaluation practices for PE
in one Malaysian Secondary

SAM Jeram is a government-aided religious

school (SABK) .
situated in Kuala Selangor.
emphasis on Islamic education.
The school curriculum is based on the
curriculum provided by JAIS and the
Ministry of Education.

qualification related to PE.
Some teachers use PE periods for

subjects.
Focus in teaching and assessing the

theoretical part of PE.

Students are selected based on their

Penilaian Sekolah Rendah Agama


(PSRA) as well as the Ujian Penilaian
Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) results.
Mostly do not perceive that PE is an

important subject.

The PE Assessment
In

2012 the PJK subject has made a


comeback in the school curriculum.
The time allocated for the teaching and
learning of PJK in SAM Jeram was only 30
minutes which equivalent to one period for
a week.
In 2012 also the government has adopted a
School Based Assessment (SBA) into the
Malaysian Secondary School Education.

The PE Assessment

In 2014,the SAM Jeram administration has

decided to increase the instructional time


for the subject from 30 minutes to one
hour.

The Problems
In

2014, Teacher A is
assigned to teach PJK at
one Form 2 class.
Teacher

a
Mathematics teacher and
has been teaching for 10
years.
In 2014, for the first time
in her teaching career,
she is assigned to teach
the Physical Health and
Education (PJK) in SAM
Appointed as the Head of
Panel for the subjects.

In the first panel meeting for 2014,

she has noted the problems faced


by the teachers in SAM Jeram in
teaching the subject. All the
teachers agreed that they are
having problem to assess students
performance
especially
in
PE
aspects.
The problems that they faced to

assess students including shortage


in sports facilities, equipments, lack
of expertise and experiences in
assessing
students,
the
effectiveness
of
teaching
and
learning
process,
students
involvement and financial support.

The Problems
Teacher A is worried that

her students are unable to


achieve the higher band in
DSP as starting from band
3, the descriptor has
included the assessment
for practical skills in PE
education.
For example to achieve
band 3, B3 DJ2 E1,
students are needed to
perform basic skills in
hand ball and badminton
with the right techniques.

As the head of panel, Teacher A is

also very concerns on other forms


DSP in PE subject especially the
lower forms students who are
involved with the SBA.
For instance, the form 3 students

will be assessed on their gymnastic


skill as part of their assessment in
band 4, B4DJ2E1.

evaluate students progress and achievement in PE


effectively?
What are the possible methods that can be
adopted to assess students of SAM Jeram in PE?
How the PE teachers in SAM Jeram can promotes
holistic assessment in SBA?
What are the perceptions of PE teachers in SAM
Jeram on their ability to assess students in SBA?
What are the solutions for PE Teachers to solve the
problems in PE assessment in SAM Jeram?
