their usual environment for not
more than one consecutive year.
Tourist is a person who is visiting a
destination for any of the purposes
like Leisure, Recreation, Holiday,
Health, Study, Religion, Sport,
Business.

Objectives

To identify the Tourist resources and


existing tourism plant facilities in Palani
town of Dindigal district, Tamil Nadu.
To examine the existing Tourism
patterns, arrivals, and use of patterns in
Palani.
To analyse the tourists satisfaction
level.
To assess the existing problems in
Tourism development in Palani town.

Limitations

There was no such study of the


kind in the field to serve as a

field visits only from few
destinations in Palani town.

Review of Literature
Case 1

S. Becken and J.Gnoth attempted to


define segments that behave similarly
in relation to travel decisions.
The question was Whether there exist
typical combinations of travel choices at
the country level and whether these
choices can be used to develop rules for
creating tourist typology.
It was found from analysis that US,
German and Australian visitors to New
Zealand are of same tourist types.
(Taking similar decisions in selecting
accomodation types, destinations,
transport, etc).

Destination specific
knowledge

Pyo Sungsoo conducted a study to


analyse destination specific knowledge.
He found that each destination type has
unique environment.
Managerial and marketing perspective
are different for different destination.
Knowledge creation, storage and reuse
should consider destination specific
needs.

Uneasyness in Goa due to
Tourism

In a study of comparion of 10 years


status of Goa, it is found that there is a
phenomenal increase in tourists visiting
Goa
Apart from few benefits to the tourist
trade, there has been increase in prices,
violation of building and land use,
escalation in violence, child sex,
prostitution, inappropriate behaviour of
tourists, and many more exploitation of
local people.

Admirations of Palani Hills

Palani is a holiest resort for all the


devotees of LORD MURUGAN. He is
the son of LORD SIVA. The shrine of
lord arurmigu Dandayudhapani swami is
at the top of the hill.
Palani is one of the six celebrated hill
abodes of LORD MURUGA
Sex abodes are

Tirupparunkunram,Tiruchendur.Palani,
Swamimalai,
Tiruttani
Pazhamuthircholai.

A Master plan by Mr.N.Mahalingam,


Industrialist of Pollachi town
The first Phase of the plan -expansion of the eastern
prakaram by 36 feet -has been completed.
Seventysix rest-rooms for gurukkals and pandarams
and toilet facilities.
The second phase consists of a 95 ft. raja gopuram.
The Nayakkar Mandapam, a 172 pillared hall.

In the Vasanta Mandapam, nine well-known


goddesses are depicted in an artistic manner.

cinema theatres are the recreation
in Palani town.

Out of 220 buses operated in palani
town, 16 buses are used for sight seeing

Majority of the visitors prefers private hotels


Constructions and the structure of the city are not
appreciated by the foreigners.
Majority of the Tourists feel that the taste and the
cleanliness of the food is good.
According to the survey it is very clear that the
transport and recreation facilities to be improved.
More than 60 percent of the visitors states that the
quality of accommodation facilities should be
improved.
More than 50% of the visitors are using rope car
and winch for climbing the hill for the darshan.
All the visitors are willing to visit the destination
again.

Suggestions for improving the Tourism


management in Palani Hills.

clean and quality toilets, rest rooms, more
people for maintenance of the place and
helping the tourists for all of their
reasonable requirements.
Quality of accommodation with modern
facilities in the devasthanam lodges to
compete with the private hotels.
Information needed in main public places
like Bus stand, Temple entrance, Tonsar
center, Winch station & Rope car station.

Innovative recreation facilities like paragliding,


ballooning,
recreation
clubs,
gymnasium, sports clubs, golf courts,
billiards centers, etc. may help the visitors
Advertisements like information centers,
banners, and distribution of brochures about
Palani to all the main places and the hotels
in Kodaikanal would attract more visitors to
Palani.

Tirupathi VENKATACHALAPATHI is the


richest god in the world.
One of the reasons for this is that the
development
of
the
infrastructure,
accommodation, food and other facilities
with proper control and supervision.
The collections go as high as 22.5
million Indian rupee a day and the
annual gold collections work out to
3000kg.
Similar approach can be followed and
implemented in Palani to attract more
visitors to the destination.

As more tourists are using winch and rope


car to climb the hill, the safety measures
can be improved with regular inspections
with additional man power.
Measures are to be taken to improve
transparency in knowing the costs for
conducting different types of poojas and
abhishekams.

Conclusion

It may be concluded that the tourism


management in Palani hills can be
improved by considering the
suggestions section of this paper.
The growth of tourists visiting Palani
hills will also contribute as a source of
income to the government through
tourism industry, which in turn acts as a
contributor to Indias GDP and helps in
helping in strengthening balance of
payments situation.
