History
Founded in 1912 by motion picture visionary Carl
Laemmle, a German immigrant who had a dream of
building a world of entertainment in Southern
California
On March 15th, 1915 Laemmles dream came to
life with the opening of Universal Studios Hollywood
That day, Laemmle issued a press release that
predicted not only the future of Universal Pictures
but of the global entertainment company that would
grow out of the movie studio
The public was invited on the property and
eventually they were allowed to attend a Universal
Studios Tour where they were given a firsthand look
at the movie-making magic

Patterns of Production
The highest grossed Universal film was Jurassic World at
almost $700,000,000
The lowest grossed Universal film was The Missing Link at
only $6,000
Out of 670 movies the total gross is $30,905,948,384 and the
average movie gross is $46,128,281

Distribution/Exhibition
Universal Pictures merged its digital distribution with
Universal Studios Home Entertainment (the home video
distribution arm of Universal Pictures)
Universal Studios Home Entertainment distributes home
videos worldwide
Universal Studios distributes its movies and uses the
subsidiary company Universal Studios Home Entertainment
to deliver home films
Universal markets their movies through their theme
parks
Universal Studios brings movies to life by rides,
shows, and events
For example, Halloween Horror Nights markets
Universal Studios films by using them as the themes
Universal Studios recently opened up the Wizarding
World of Harry Potter in 2010, which was a huge
success and broke Universals attendance record
Universal then opened up a second Harry Potter
world in 2014

Diversification & Convergence

Universal Studios began in Los Angeles, California in 1915
It has grown into several more locations such as Orlando, Florida
and Osaka, Japan
Universal Studios is owned by NBC Universal and Comcast
It contains many subsidiaries such as Illumination Entertainment,
Universal Studios Home Entertainment, DreamWorks Animation, etc.
Comcast is unifying or converging Universal Studios Film Company
and Universal Studios theme parks
It now owns Universal Studios Film Company, Universal Studios
theme parks, NBC, etc.
Universal Studios is a part of the Big Six Film Studios

Technology Evolution & Impacts

The practice of filming in front of an audience worked fine until the
end of the silent film era when quiet on the set became
necessary to filming with sound.
In the early days, Universal invited riders on E.T. Adventure Ride
and asked their names. Their names were repeated later on in the
ride.
Before 2000, Universal opened up a 3-D attraction, with 3-D
effects and other features.
Newer rides like Spiderman and Transformers create the
illusion of speed, action, and excitement similar to the films
Universal has built roller coasters, and incorporated latest
interactive technology into the rides
Overall, Universal Studios technology has been strong and will
continue to improve as technology develops. This is necessary to
attract more people and make the rides as realistic as possible.
