Problem:
Ammonia is to be removed from a 15 per cent ammonia
air mixture by countercurrent scrubbing with water in a
packed tower at 293 K so that 90 per cent of the
ammonia is removed when working at a total pressure of
101.3 kN/m2. If the gas rate is 1 kg/s.m2 of tower crosssection. The absorption coefficient KGa = 0.001
kmol/s.m3 (kN/m2) partial pressure difference.

Parameters of Absorber Design

Selection of Solvent
Solvent: Water

Why we choose water?

Solubility
Volatility
Viscosity
Corrosiveness
Easily available
Cheap

Selection of Packing
Packed Column
The performance of a packed column is very dependent on the maintenance of
good liquid and gas distribution throughout the packed bed, and this is an
important consideration in packed column design.
Packing Size
Intalox saddle (ceramic)
Size

1.5 inch

Packing factor, Fp (f-1)

52

Equilibrium Data

From the general material balance equation

(GS) min (Y1 Y2) = (LS) min (X1 X2)
Minimum solvent Flow rate
(LS) min = 0.9722 kg/s.m2

Equilibrium Curve and Operating Line

Diameter of Column

= 0.0424
Cp = 1.8
Cs = 0.2545 (Browns constant)
A

= 0.383848 m2

= 0.7 m

Pressure Drop (P)

(P/L) = 1.8277 inches of water per foot of packing

(P/L) = 1.49 kPa/m of packing

Tower Height
Number of transfer units are

NTU = 13.7
