Unit 18- Storyboarding

for digital media

Annotated storyboard

Types of Storyboard
There are many different
types and layouts of
storyboards but these are
the most common and
effective.

This design is popular

among filmmaker
because of the
amount of detail it
allows. A
disadvantage is that
there is little or no

simplicity and length.
A disadvantage is that

Miniatures.
These can be useful for action shots with lots of
cuts and close up shots as they are quick to draw
due to their size and accurately create a flowing
idea of what is happening in the scene. A
drawback is the distinct lac of space inside to
annotate.

What is Storyboarding?
Storyboarding is when a production company use an
artist to work with the director and create a visual
representation of what will happen on screen at
different scenes.
Some directors use storyboarding much more heavily
than others, while some will just create a rough
representation of what will happen others will create a
storyboard so detailed it could almost be used instead
of a script- for example Mad Max- Fury Road

Purpose of storyboarding.
The purpose of storyboarding is, as Wikipedia puts it,
Astoryboardis a graphic organizer in the form of
illustrations or images displayed in sequence for
thepurposeof pre-visualizing a motion picture,
animation, motion graphic or interactive media
sequence. in normal terms it is a middle ground inbetween the script and film.

Storyboarding in film
Storyboarding in film is probably the most popular use of
storyboarding in any form of media. When used properly
it can be an extremely useful visual aid for filmmakers as
it can be used with a shot list to gain a greater
understanding of how to film edit and frame a shot.

Storyboarding film Example.

This is The
Storyboard for
Mad Max- Fury
Road- A film
Nearly entirely
written through
storyboards

The storyboard bears striking

resemblance to the actual shots in the
film, very little if anything has
changed. Some films have been
created with less influence by
storyboards though.

Sound effects, motion and

camera movements are all
fairly clear in this through
use of motion blur,
onomatopoeia and camera
arrows

Storyboarding in video Games

In my research, storyboarding is used a lot less in video
games than film, and I think this is due to the fact that
films are a lot longer and usually more narratively
complex. This is because in Video games, gameplay is
broken up into segments with cutscenes in-between.
They are generally not longer than a couple of minutes
and are animated using the games engine.

Storyboarding in video games

example
This is a cut scene from God of
War
It was designed to break up
gameplay and build upon a
narrative into the game.

Like in films, camera

movements are shown, as
well as some character
movements. This is
probably to make it easier
for developers and
animators.

Storyboarding in music videos

Storyboarding in my research has been used the least
compared to all other mediums. I think this is because
music videos will usually have no narrative structure and
will be mainly shots of the performer/performers playing
their music. This means it is a lot less necessary to have
a storyboard showing in detail what will happen.

Storyboarding in Music Videos

Example
This is a music video for the song
David Guetta- I can only imagine
In my research the amount of
directions an general quality in this
storyboard is high above average
and yet is still less than most of the
film storyboards.

Storyboarding seems to be much less

important in the creation of music
videos. The actual music video looks to
have a very high production quality but
even still does not follow the storyboard.
