Engine and

Transmission
Objective

Engine is the powerhouse for any vehicle which converts fuel

energy into mechanical energy.
Main objective : To select engine under rulebook consideration&
design transmission system so as to give maximum performance
for dynamic events.
Engine Selection
The engine of Bajaj Discover 125T is selected because it has the
max. power output and torque. It also has the highest Power to
weight ratio.
Parameter Details
Engine Capacity 124.6cc
Engine Type 4-Stroke, Single cylinder, 4-
valve, Twin Spark, Air cooled.
Max. Power 12.33 HP @9000rpm
Max. Torque 10.8 Nm @6500rpm
Bore X Stroke (57 X 49) mm
Starter Electric, Kick.
Power to Weight Ratio 98.4 BHP/Tonne
Torque to Weight Ratio 86.4 Nm/Tonne
Transmission

Bajaj Discover 125T has a 5-Speed all up gearbox.

We used Solenoid operated gear shifting mechanism for easy and
quick shifting.
We have used push button operated gear shifting for the ease of
driver. The Shift UP & Shift DOWN buttons are mounted on the
steering wheel.
This mechanism is very reliable and it does not consume large
amount of battery power.
Solenoid Mechanism
A Solenoid is a type of
electromagnet when the purpose
is to generate a magnetic field.
We chose a solenoid operated
gear shifter because of its ease
of use.
When the UP or DOWN button
switch is pressed which is
mounted on the steering wheel,
the circuit actuates the solenoid
accordingly.
In this way, a gear is shifted UP
or DOWN.

Fuel Supply System

As per the rule book the fuel tank has to be mount below the
steering column.
To satisfy this condition, the fuel pump has to be used to supply
the fuel above 450 mm height.
The fuel needs to be fed against the gravity to the carburetor.
For this we have used Low pressure electric fuel pump.
Fuel Pump

A Low pressure fuel pump which can feed

the petrol to the carburetor from the fuel
tank against the gravity is used.

Parameter Description

Brand Generic HEP-02A

Flow > 70 l/hr

Voltage 12V

Current 1.8A

Output Pressure 3-6 Psi

Air Filter

To improve the air intake and

performance of the engine, we
replaced the stock air filter with
the K&N air filter.
The K&N air filter has an overall
filtration efficiency of 98%.
It also increases the power
output by 2-5 HP depending upon
the size of the engine.
Dynamic Calculations

We performed analytical calculations on the data available to us.
The following values are the results of different calculations
Weight distribution on vehicle (rear): 60:40
Total Vehicle Weight = 170 kg
Weight on Rear Axle = 108kg
Gear Ratio = 3.0833
Max. Velocity(V) = 96.8464 Km/ hr.
Max. Acceleration (a) = 5.0007 m/
Force Calculations
Diameter of Rear Axle = 27.839mm 30mm
Force on Driver Sprocket = 432 N
Force on Driven Sprocket = 443.9946
Force on Chain (Chain Tension) = 135.610N
Analysis of Driven Sprocket

Max. Displacement = 7.834 X mm Max. Elemental Stress = 13.59 Mpa

Engine Mounting C-Channel
Analysis

Max. Displacement = 2.393 X mm Max. Stress = 3.74 MPa
