Connected Devices Forecast*

Orchestrating network performance | 7

* Connected devices forecast from Ericsson Mobility Report, June 2016. SIGFOX and LoRa fall under Non-cellular IoT; NB-IoT is considered Cellular IoT
IoT Service Requirements

There is no need for broadband connectivity.

Reliable connectivity to transmit intermittent data at effective cost; lower cost in exchange for lower
throughput
Long coverage range (distance to serving node)

Support for a massive number of devices

Long device battery life

Low uplink transmission power, and low power consumption

Narrow bandwidth, or low avg. bandwidth consumption per device

Higher level of delay-tolerance

LPWA IoT at a Glance
Low Power Wide Area (LPWA)

Spectrum: unlicensed bands such as 900 MHz or TV whitespace

Examples:
SIGFOX: (ultra narrow-band) CNB, proprietary
LoRa-Semtech: (spread spectrum), proprietary
Weightless: open source standard
Ingenu -On-RAMP-: (RPMA: Random Phase Multiple Access)
Key Features:
power-optimized IoT
lower-complexity waveforms (cheaper devices)
Interference handling capabilities:
wide-band spread spectrum
narrow bandwidth w. frequency hopping capabilities

LPWA low cost (< $5) modules are key enablers for the rapid growth in
IoT market.

SIGFOX

Orchestrating network performance |

SIGFOX

Unlicensed Spectrum (902/915 MHz ISM band in the US, 868 MHz in Europe)

Ultra-narrowband technology (~100Hz/transmission):

The carrier is divided in 400 channels of 100Hz
High power spectrum density (power is concentrated on ultra small bandwidth)
low thermal noise (~ -150 dBm at T = 290 K)
Modulations:
Uplink: deferential BPSK. Random FDMA-based transmission (Frequency hopping).
Downlink: frequency-shift keying GFSK

LoRa

Orchestrating network performance |

LoRa

LoRa modulation: a version of Chirp Spread Spectrum (CSS) with a typical channel bandwidth of
125KHz
Spectrum: unlicensed, i.e. the 915 MHz ISM band in the US, 868 MHz in Europe

Communication between end-devices and gateways is spread out on a set of

orthogonal channels of different data rates.
Each channel has a different spreading factor, where higher spreading factors result in lower data
rates but better coverage.
Packet size can range from 2 to 255 bytes

Data rates range from 0.3 kbps to 50 kbps (corresponding to various spreading factors, code
rates, and channel bandwidths)

Orchestrating network performance |

LoRa

For a 125 KHz LoRa carrier, assuming the highest code rate, the uplink data rates
of the eight available channels are:

Channel (modulation) Bit Rate (b/s) Required SINR (dB)

LoRa SF = 6 9375 -5
LoRa SF = 7 5468 -7.5
LoRa SF = 8 3125 -10
LoRa SF = 9 1757 -12.5
LoRa SF = 10 976 -15
LoRa SF = 11 537 -17.5
LoRa SF = 12 293 -20

LoRaWAN Networks

LoRaWAN network architecture is a star-of-stars topology in which IP-Connected

gateways are transparent bridges relaying messages of end-devices
Communication between end-devices and gateways is spread out on
different frequency channels and data rates. Rates range from 0.3 kbps to 50 kbps.
The selection of the data rates (spreading factors) is a trade-off between
communication range and message duration
Relies on orthogonality between transmissions which could suffer badly when
multiple overlapping networks are deployed in the same spectrum
