Educational philosophy is philosophy applied to
education as a specific area of human
endeavour.
Involves bringing those critical reflections which
characterize philosophy in general to influence
and direct the range of experiences and
possessions that may be referred to as
education.
Does not exist in a vacuum, but within a
particular social and historical context.
Educational philosophy, according to Soltis
(1988) has three dimensions:
(1) the personal
(2) the public
(3) the professional.
Four Educational Philosophies

Perennialism
Aims to develop students intellectual and moral
qualities.
Teaches concepts and focuses on knowledge and
the meaning of knowledge.

Essentialism
Core of curriculum: essential knowledge and
skills and academic rigor
Progressivism
Believes that education should focus on the child
Stresses that students should test ideas by active
experimentation
Curriculum content is derived from student interests
and questions

Reconstructionism
Focus on a curriculum that highlights social reform as
the aim of education
Community-based learning and bringing the world
into the classroom
The Importance of Philosophy of
Education to Teachers
The study of Philosophy of Education will provide
teachers with:
An understanding of the purpose of education process
for humanity.
Knowledge of the basis for selection of educational
goals and ability to adjudicate conflicts over values in
education.

A teaching philosophy is important for the same


reason that a map is important when you are
going to try to travel to some place that you have
