SWOT ANALYSIS
Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Strength
A strategic planning method used to evaluate internal and
external opportunities for a project/programme or
institution/organization.
It can also facilitate the development of an action plan for
a new initiative.
Renowned tool for audit and analysis of the overall
strategic position of the business and its environment.
Its key purpose is to identify the strategies that will create
a firm specific business model that will best align an
organizations resources and capabilities to the
requirements of the environment in which the firm
operates.
SWOT ANALYSIS
Why should you use one?
- SWOT method was originally developed for business and industry, but it is equally useful in the
work of community health and development, education and even personal growth.
- Not only for assessment technique but is one with long track record of effectiveness.
The strength of this method are its simplicity and application to variety of levels of operation.

When do you use SWOT?


Use to explore possibilities for new efforts or solutions to problems
Make decisions about the best path for your initiative.
Determine where change is possible.
Adjust and refine plans mid-course.
Explore new solutions to problems
Identify barriers that will limit goals/objectives

Who develops the SWOT?


- Most common users of SWOT analysis are team members and project members who are
responsible for decision-making and strategic planning.

When and where do you develop a SWOT analysis?


- often created during a retreat of planning session that allows several hours for both
brainstorming and more structured analysis.

- are often internal context within a programme or in the organization

Opportunities and Threats


- refers to the external context, including factors outside the programme or
organizations control which affect their work.

STRENGTH characteristics of the business or project that give it an advantage
over others.

- what advantages does your organization have?


- what do you do better than anyone else?
- what unique or lowest cost of resources can you draw upon that others cant?
- what do people in your market see as your strength?

WEAKNESS characteristics that place the business or project at a disadvantage


relative to others.

- what could you improve?


- what should you avoid?
- what are people in your market likely to see as weakness?
- what factors lose your sales?

OPPORTUNITIES elements that the business or project could exploit to its advantage.

- what good opportunities can you spot?


- what interesting trends are you aware of?
- changes in government policy related to your field?
- changes in social patterns, population profiles, lifestyle changes?
- local events

THREATS elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the business or
project.

- what obstacles do you face?


- what are your competitors doing?
- are quality standards or specifications for your job, products or services changing?
- Is changing technology threatening your position?
- Do you have bad debt or cash-flow problems?
- could any of your weaknesses seriously threaten your business/corporation?

BENEFITS
The SWOT analysis in Social Work practice
framework is beneficial because it helps
organizations decide whether or not an objective is
obtainable and therefore enables organizations to
set achievable goals, objectives and steps to further
the social change or community development effort.
It enables organizers to take visions and produce
practical and efficient outcomes that effect long-
lasting change, and it helps organizations gather
meaningful information to maximize their potentials.
SWOT ANALYSIS
Limitation of SWOT Analysis:
- SWOT Analysis is not free from its limitations. It may cause organizations to view circumstances as very
simple because of which organizations might overlook certain key strategic contact which may occur.
- Categorizing aspects as strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats migh be very subjective as
there is great degree of uncertainty in the market.

Certain limitations of SWOT analysis which are not in control of management:


a) Price increase
b) Inputs/raw materials
c) Government Legislation
d) Economic Environment
e) Searching a new market for the product which is not having overseas market due to import
restrictions

Internal limitations may include


a) Insufficient research and development facilities
b) Faulty products due to poor quality control
c) Poor Industrial relations
d) lack of skilled and efficient labour; etc
