Objective
The objective of this presentation to provide a snapshot of
functionalities for WBS elements and network activities used
in SAP Project System along with comparative analysis to
enable the business to take the right decision.
Snapshot

WBS Elements- Structure element of the work breakdown

structure (WBS)which describes either a certain task or a
partial task that can be subdivided further. It has more finance
and controlling functionality than logistics functionality in SAP.

Network Activities- Network Activities which are assigned to

WBS elements, are used for detailed view of costs, dates, and
capacities. Its a task in a network which has a defined start
and finish. An activity can be broken down into activity
elements. It has more logistics functionality in SAP.

1. WBS elements are used for basic/high level/
hierarchical scheduling.
2 Budgeting is done at WBS element level
3. Cost planning at GL/cost element, Material
and resources(BOQ) can be done at WBS
level
4. WBS elements can be used with network
activities if minimum scheduling
functionalities are required
5. Extensive logistic(MM) integration with PS is
not supported with WBS elements
6. Confirmation process is not supported with
WBS element.
Network Activities
Network Activities are used for detail scheduling,
making relationship among different activities,
generating Floats etc.It is important to note that there
is considerably more administrative efforts required in
order to create/maintain/update/close network
activities.
Budgeting cant be done at Network activities level.
In order to do cost planning at network activities,
material components needs to be assigned and as a
result more efforts is required to achieve this.
Network activities cant be used without WBS
elements and as a result mapping between WBS
elements and network activities is key for designing
project structure.
Network activities can be used for detail logistics(MM)
integration with PS i.e. direct material planning,
procurement etc. from project system
Confirmation process is supported in network
activities.
