ACTIVITY 15 PROVING THE HINGE THEOREM

__ __ __ __
Given: CAN and LYT; CA LY, AN YT, mA > mY
Prove: CN > LT

Proof:
1. Construct AW such that:
. AW AN YT . .
. AW is between AC and AN, and
. CAW LYT.

Consequently, CAW LYT by SAS Triangle Congruence postulate. So,

CW LT because corresponding parts of congruent triangles are congruent.
___
2. Construct the bisector AH of NAW such that:
H is on CN
NAH WAH

___ Consequently, NAH WAH by SAS Triangle Congruence Postulate because

AH AH by reflexive property of equality and AW AN from construction no. 1. so,
WH HN because corresponding parts of congruent triangles are congruent.

STATEMENT REASONS
1. From the Illustration: Segment Addition Postulate
CN + CH + HN

2. CH = CH + WH Substitution Property

3. In CHW, CH + WH > CW Triangle Inequality Theorem 3

4. Using Statement 2 and 3: Transitive Property

CN > CW
5. Using statement in construction 1 Substitution Property
and Statement 3: CN > LT
