Declarative Sentences
The basic form of sentence
A declarativesentence is a statement
thatstates a fact, opinion or an argument and
ends with a full stop

Here are some examples of declarative


sentences:

There are 7 billion people in the world.


London is the capital of England.
I play football
I can eat 5 bowls of noodle in half an hour
I hate that boy
Interrogative Sentences
What is interrogative sentences?

Is a sentence that ask a direct question.


It always ends with a question mark ?

The term interrogative


sentence is another name for a
question.
Examples of Interrogative Sentences
Has anyone seen my bag?
What's the capital of Peru?
What is your name?

However, always beware with the sentences in the form


of indirect questions.
A statement with an indirect question can becomes a
declarative sentence or imperative sentence and it is
not an interrogative sentence
Example
I wonder if I ever going to find my bag? ( you declaring
or telling that you might not find your bag)
Can you switch on the light? (you are telling or
asking someone to turn on the light)
Types of Question
Yes/No Questions.
The answer to ayes/no questionwill
beyesorno
example: Is it raining? Are you ok?

"Question Word" Questions.


The main focus of the question depends on
the Word.
example: why are you mad ? Why are you
bored ? Where do you live ?
The answer to a"question word"
questionwill be information.

Choice Questions.
Questions that require you to make a choice
The answer to achoice questionwill be in the
question.

Example:
Question: Do you want to sit with me or him?
Answer : I want to sit with you/ him.
Exercise:
Identify which type of question that these questions belong to
i. Do you want to watch a movie?
ii. Where is my pen?
iii. Did he go to work or to school?
iv. Do you want salsa dip or cheese dip?
v. Why is he here?
vi. Is your car white or black?
vii. Can youdrive?
Imperative sentence
An imperative sentence gives a direct command.
It can end in a full stop or an exclamation mark,
depending on the forcefulness of the command.

Here are some examples of imperative sentences:

Clear this desk by tomorrow!


Please tidy your room.
Consider the lily.
Drive to the roundabout and then turn left.

If the command is forceful, use an exclamation
mark.
Example:
Get out!
Keep quiet!

If the command is polite or in the form of advice,


use period/full stop.
Example:
Keep quite please.
Please make sure you come to the class on time.
Exclamatory sentences
A sentence or statement that is used to
show emotions and excitements.
Always ends with exclamatory marks !
Example:
Hooray! I can fly
Look at that!
Hes so big!

Positive Sentence
Positive sentences are the sentences that give
us information.
Positive sentences tell us what something is,
has or does.

Example:
i. I want to go to the market.
ii. He is a teacher.
iii. I am writing a letter.
iv. I will win the match tomorrow.
Negative Sentence
A negative sentence (or statement) states that
something is not true or incorrect.
A negative adverb has to be added in order to
negate or cancel thevalidityof the
sentence.
Just add the word NOT inside the sentence.

Example:
i. Ido notwant to go to the market.
ii. I willnotwin the match tomorrow.
iii. I cannot play.
iv. We shouldnt play.
How to Change (+) sentence to (-)
and the other way around.
It is easy, jut add or take out the word NOT

Example
positive to negative just add the word NOT
He can play football > He cant/cannot play
foot ball

negative to positive just take out the word


NOT
I dont want to go to the market > I want to go
to the market
Exercise
Change these sentences in to their negative or
positive form.

1) I ran all the way to the shops.


2) The children can read a book together.
3) John is not tired
4) Sam didn't eat all the sweets.
5) Mary has gone to Spain.
6) He does not like his job.
7) Are you going to the United States?
