WASTE WATER

MANAGEMENT
What is wastewater Management ?

process of removing contaminants from

wastewater, both runoff and domestic
Usually refer to sewage treatment, or
domestic wastewater treatment
Goals
-To discharge or reuse the
same water or runoff which is
used earlier after treating. .
Source
s

-Domestic waste water

-Industrial waste water
-Runoff
How can it be treated?

collected and transported

via a network of pipes
and pump stations to a
treatment plant
3 stages of water treatment
Primary
solids are separated
Secondary
dissolved biological matter is converted into a solid mass by
using aerobic bacteria.
95% of the suspended molecules should be removed
Tertiary
biological solids are neutralized then disposed, and treated
water may be disinfected chemically or physically
Types of treatment
Mechanical treatment
Influx (Influent)
Removal of large objects
Removal of sand and grit

1.Screening

Inlet
Screening tank
Outlet

It is the process in which bigger

materials are separated from
taken waste water
2.Grit chamber

Inlet
Grit chamber Outlet

It is the process of separating the

stones and gravels from the waste
water
3.Oil skimmer

Oil outlet
Inlet
Oil separating tank Outlet

It is the process in which oil is

separated from the waste water
4.Plain sedimentation tank

Inlet

Sedimentation
tank

Outlet

Materials deposited

It is a process in which materials

settle down by the gravity after a
interval of time taken
5.Activated sludge process

Oxygen

Inlet Outlet

Recirculation of some
Oxygen gas water
It is process of removal of organic materials
present in waste water by the help of
aerobic bacteria
6.Tricking filter
Water Holes

Inlet

Stones with bacteria

Outlet
It is also a same i.e removal of organic material
but the method is different from
Activated sludge process. Here, the bacteria's are
attached with the stones.
7.Settling chamber

Inlet Outlet

Settling tank

Settled matter

It is the process where lastly some of

the small impurities are deposited after
the decomposition of organic materials
8.Filtration

It is the physical process in which

treated water is
filtered so that no any impurities
should be left in water

After filtration we can discharge

the water to rivers or we can use
it for further process.
9.Disinfection

It is the process to kill the

microbes present in water by
varies process-like
chlorination,uv rays,o3 etc.

Chlorination is used mostly

because it is cheaper in cost
and minor harm for drinking
