PSYCHOLOGICAL THEORIES
ON MOTIVATION
Motivation can be conceived of as a cycle in which thoughts
influence behaviors, behaviors drive performance,
performance affects thoughts, and the cycle begins again.
Each stage of the cycle is composed of many dimensions
including attitudes, beliefs, intentions, effort, and withdrawal
which can all affect the motivation that an individual
experiences. Most psychological theories hold that
motivation exists purely within the individual, but
socio-cultural theories express motivation as an outcome of
participation in actions and activities within the cultural
context of social groups.
Motivation can be divided into two different
theories known as intrinsic (internal or
inherent) motivation and extrinsic (external)
motivation.
Intrinsic motivation is the self-desire to
seek out new things and new
challenges, to analyze one's capacity,
to observe and to gain knowledge.
Advantages:
Intrinsic motivation can be long-lasting and self-sustaining.
Efforts to build this kind of motivation are also typically
efforts at promoting student learning. Such efforts often
focus on the subject rather than rewards or punishments.
Disadvantages:
Efforts at fostering intrinsic motivation can be slow to affect
behavior and can require special and lengthy preparation.
Students are individuals, so a variety of approaches may be
needed to motivate different students. It is often helpful to
know what interests one's students in order to connect
these interests with the subject matter. This
Extrinsic motivation refers to the
performance of an activity in order to
attain a desired outcome and it is the
opposite of intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic
motivation comes from influences
outside of the individual. In extrinsic
motivation, the harder question to
answer is where do people get the
motivation to carry out and continue to
push with persistence.
WHY IS MOTIVATION IMPORTANT?
Motivation is important because it provides the drive
for people to accomplish their goals, maintain their
responsibilities or solve problems. Motivation can be
created or re-sparked by looking at one's goals, assessing
the stakes of achieving those goals and creating
milestones as well as personal rewards for gaining
progress.
Motivation can be difficult for people who work in
professional office settings where they may feel their hard
work goes unnoticed or the constant pressures of a
competitive environment wear them down. Motivation is an
important to maintain in a workforce, especially since it's
one of the primary driving factors behind a staff that is
productive and works together in a dynamic manner. To
maintain motivation in staff, management is commonly
advised to try to find out what keeps their staff productive
and engaged in their work. Motivation isn't always important
for maintaining productivity, however. It can also be an
important reason why companies retain their employees.
Because of the obvious importance of motivation on not
only a personal but also a fundamental level in the context
of business, managers oftentimes create methods to
boost and maintain motivation in their employees. Some
examples of this in action can be seen in monetary
incentive programs or when rewards and titles of
recognition are given to employees that continue to do
great work. Some businesses also use bonus pools or
orchestrate spotlights on various employees. This makes
them feel more connected to the company and therefore
more motivated to work towards the company's success.
The Ultimate Guide to Motivation
How to Achieve Any Goal
One of the biggest challenges in meeting any goal, whether it be
related to productivity, waking early, changing a habit, exercising, or just
becoming happier, is finding the motivation to stick with it.
If you can stick with a goal for long enough, youll almost always get
there eventually. It just takes patience, and motivation.
Motivation is the key, but its not always easy, day in and day out, to
find that motivation.
What follows is a guide to motivation using what Ive learned over the
last few years in a series of successful accomplishments, goals and
habit changes. Ive had many failures, but also many successes, and
Ive learned a lot from all of them. Motivation has been a particularly
important topic of exploration for me.
What Motivation Can Achieve
What have I accomplished using these motivation methods?
Too much to mention, just in the last 3 years: running two
marathons, learning to become an early riser, losing 40
pounds, completing a triathlon, becoming vegetarian,
becoming more productive, starting a successful blog, writing
a book, becoming organized, simplifying my life, quitting my
day job, tripling my income, eliminating my debt, and much
more.
Thats not intended to sound like bragging, but to show you
what can be accomplished (just to start) if you find the right
motivation.
How Does Motivation Work?
Before we get into specific methods, its useful to examine what motivation
is, what it does, and how it works.
Motivation is what drives you toward a goal, what keeps you going when
things get tough, the reason you get up early to exercise or work late to
finish a project. There are all kinds of motivations, of course, from positive to
negative. Having a boss threaten to fire you is motivation youll likely work
harder to complete a project with that kind of pressure. But I find that positive
motivation works better if its something you really want to do, youll do a
much better job than to avoid something you dont want (such as being
fired).
So motivation, in its best form, is a way for you to want to do something.
There may be times, for example, when you dont feel like getting up early,
and in those times you may seriously just want to sleep in (not that theres
anything wrong with that). But if you have a reason to want to get up early,
something you really really want to do, youll jump up out of bed with
The best motivation, then, is a way for you to really want
something, to get excited about it, to be passionate
about it. Remember that, as there are many other types
of motivation (especially negative), but in my experience,
this is the kind that works the best.
There is only so long that you can go trying to motivate
yourself to do something you dont like to do, something
you dont want to do. But if you find ways to really want
to do something, you can sustain your effort for much,
much longer.
Maslow's hierarchy of needs
Content theory of human motivation includes both
Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs and Herzberg's two-factor
theory. Maslow's theory is one of the most widely discussed
theories of motivation. Abraham Maslow believed that man is
inherently good and argued that individuals possess a constantly
growing inner drive that has great potential. The needs hierarchy
system, devised by Maslow (1954), is a commonly used scheme
for classifying human motives.
The American motivation psychologist Abraham H. Maslow
developed the hierarchy of needs consisting of five hierarchic
classes. According to Maslow, people are motivated by
unsatisfied needs. The needs, listed from basic (lowest-earliest)
to most complex (highest-latest) are as follows:
Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory can be summarized as follows:
Human beings have wants and desires which influence their behavior.
Only unsatisfied needs influence behavior, satisfied needs do not.
Needs are arranged in order of importance to human life, from the
basic to the complex.
The person advances to the next level of needs only after the lower
level need is at least minimally satisfied.
The further the progress up the hierarchy, the more individuality,
humanness and psychological health a person will show.
Top 5 Ways to Motivate Your Employees
(Its Easier Than You Think)
Happy workers are productive workers. But how do you motivate a
group of employees to work hard and help your business grow?
Luckily, motivating your employees doesnt take a lot of flare or even
a lot of resources. In fact, it could require you to just schedule a few
minutes on your schedule to say hi.
As a small business owner, you need to maximize revenue and
increase productivity, which means you need your staff to work as
efficiently as possible. To get you off to a good start, follow these top
ways to motivate your employees.
1. Communicate Better
If youre nothing more than a face on a newsletter
or a name on an email, what motivation will your
employees have to meet your goals? The
importance of employee communications is often
overlooked. You should communicate with them
frequently, and actually speak with them face-to-
face. Your staff needs to know they are valued,
and communicating in person with them is the
best way to show your appreciation for their hard
work.
2. Be An Example

You cant expect your employees to work hard or

behave the way you want them to if you dont lead
by example. If you show your excitement about the
companys goals, your employees will get on-board
and work to achieve those goals. Good moods are
always infectious especially in the workplace.
3. Empower Them
Give your employees more of a say in how they do their job. Ask
for their input and get suggestions on how they can improve their
performance. Most employees have ideas about how they can be
more efficient, but they may not share them with you unless you
specifically ask them. Use regular employee reviews to discuss
these improvements, but dont just ask. If you really want to
empower and motivate your employees, you need to take their
advice and implement it. You should also give them the authority
to make their own decisions, such as providing service for a client
up to a certain point without needing to get prior approval.
4. Offer Opportunities For Advancement
Your employees are more motivated when they know
theyre working towards something. If they think theres no
opportunity for advancement, they dont have much to work
for. Nobody wants to work a dead-end job. Motivate your
employees by offering training that gives them the skills
they need to climb their career ladder. Grooming young
employees to move on to better opportunities is valuable to
you as well because it enables you to build your companys
reputation as a great place to work.
5. Provide Incentives

Incentives are always motivation boosters and

they dont have to be expensive. You can offer
incentives like an extra paid day off, gift cards,
tickets to the movies, or other low-cost ways to
show your appreciation. Of course, cash rewards
are always good incentives as well.
Motivation plays a key role in keeping
your best employees, too. If you dont
consistently motivate your employees,
youre sure to experience a higher
amount of turnover
