Tremendous 2: energy efficiency.
Why do you get an
electric shock when
youve shuffled along
the carpet & then
touch a metal door
handle?
What is a simple machine
& name all 6 of them?
Energy transfer (change)
A lamp turns
electrical energy
into heat and
light energy
Sankey Diagram
A Sankey diagram helps to show how
much light and heat energy is produced.
Why are they called Sankey Diagrams?

Captain Matthew Henry Phineas Riall

Sankey was an engineer.

In 1898 he was the first person to publish

a diagram that used the width of an arrow
to show the size of the energy flow.

The first ever Sankey diagram shows the

energy flow in a real steam engine
compared with a perfect engine.

Sankey diagrams are so useful that you

Captain Henry Sankey (1853 1925) can buy computer programs to draw them!
Sankey Diagram
The thickness of each arrow is drawn
to scale to show the amount of energy.
Sankey Diagram
Notice that the total amount of energy
before is equal to the total amount of
energy after (conservation of energy)
Efficiency
Although the total energy out is the
same, not all of it is useful.
Efficiency
Efficiency is defined as:

Efficiency (%) = useful energy output x 100

total energy input
Example
Efficiency = 75 x 100 = 15%
500
Energy efficient light bulb
Efficiency = 75 x 100 = 75%
100
Energy efficient light bulb
Efficiency = 75 x 100 = 75%
100 Thats much
better!
More complex examples
Jessie explains to her brother that when
electrical energy goes into a lightbulb, some
of the energy is transformed into light
energy but some is lost as heat energy.

Is this explanation correct?

If not, what should Jessie have said?
