The Confederacy Breaks
Shermans capturing of Atlanta in
September of 1864, gave Lincoln
the boost in popular opinion he
needed to win reelection two
months later
The war was weighing heavy on
both sides as the total casualty
counts began to reach staggering
numbers
The Confederacy had lost control of
most of the South and was
desperately trying to keep Virginia
Grant using an attrition strategy,
had surrounded Richmond and laid
siege to the last remaining
stronghold, Petersburg the end of
the war was at hand
Lincoln: 2nd Inaugural Address
After winning the election of
1864 against one of his former
generals-George McClellan,
Lincoln knew that war was
coming to an end and wished
to do all he could to bring the
South back into the Union with
as little conflict as possible
In his Second Inaugural
Address on March 4, 1865 he
struck a conciliatory (forgiving)
and compassionate tone
towards the South and spoke of
the difficulties and challenges
