Educating Yorkshire

(2013) Season 1 Episode 2

-Documentary timeline, first five minutes.
0-1 minutes
Sound
The ambient sound that introduces the documentary is the school bell going off. This is followed by a bustle
of students rushing to lessons and a teacher directing the flow of children.
5 seconds in the voiceover starts by introducing the documentary. The narration flips in between footage of
students getting told off in a montage of various school days.
A light hearted soundtrack also accompanies the footage by mimicking the bustle of children running
through the corridors.
Camera angle
An aerial shot is used to show the staircase whilst the teachers voice moves the students along. Match on
action used between a student getting told off in the montage and the teachers face. It shows the direct
height difference and authority between the two individuals.
Action covered
As its an introductory montage it shows highlights that will happen/ have happened in the series to create
a hook on the audience. It also shows different aspects of the school such as isolation and math class. It also
introduces the new head teacher in the school. It shows a small section of interview explaining his passion
towards improving school grades as layover footage shows the pastoral care in place after an incident.
1-2 minutes

Sound
At 1 minute 34 seconds the introduction montage stops and the documentary title appears. The
sound dissolves out a whilst the title appears and then immediately creates a sound bridge of a
new track to move into the focus of this particular episode.
Camera angles
It immediately goes into the head teacher in his office. Various short duration shots show different
angles of his working day. As this is a fly on the wall style documentary the camera is often high
angle. It has a close up of him writing some paperwork and a zoom of his facial expressions whilst
sorting out an incident.
As this progresses theres also an interview of him speaking about his work ethic about his
school. His voice is used as another sound bridge to link his interview with shots of the school at
lunch time.
Action covered
Moves into the head confronting a dispute between students and speaking to the head of pastoral
care whilst they sort out the argument. This includes various match on action shots between the
two employees as more information arises about the incident.
3-4 minutes
Sound
There is no soundtrack at this point of the documentary. This could be because theyre
addressing a more serious issue of a fight. The sound of the girl, Georgia, involved in the
incident carries through as a voiceover between various shots of the teachers sorting out the
incident and camera shots of the girls on the phone.
Camera angles
There are many different camera angles used in this point of the documentary used in short
duration. This goes alongside the fast pace action that the audience is hearing about. An
important two mid-shot is used with the principle and the male involved in the fight. This
shows the formality of the situation as most of the heads office is in shot.
Action covered
As previously explained there was a physical fight at lunch time. This is followed by sit down
interviews with the head teacher and a number of other teachers involved in sorting out the
altercation.
4-5 minutes
Sound
The sound transitions between the female, Georgia, speaking loudly on the phone to her
mother to a serious calmer environment of Jack (the male) in the head teachers office.
Theres only ambient sound so no soundtrack or voiceovers are used. Theres slight noise of
other students however this doesn't interrupt the footage.
Camera angles
A close up match on action sequence is used to show the conversation between Jack and the
head teacher. As he divulges into the details of the fight the shot duration lengthens. This is
so we can see each reaction of himself and the head teacher whilst he explains the incident.
Its especially important when the focus is on the head teacher.
Action covered
The scene only shows the explanation of Jack whilst sitting around a table in the heads
office.
