BACKUP AND

RECOVERY
STARTER: RECAP
What is a backup?

3 minutes
OBJECTIVES
Recall the definition of a backup.
Identify the steps to a backup plan.
Explain the difference between an archive and
a backup.
STARTER: RECAP
Backup: Making copies of files that can be
used to restore the original file if lost:
Without loss of data
Within a Reasonable time scale
ASPECTS OF A BACKUP PLAN
What Data is to be Backed Up? - Data files, operating system files, application files.

When Will Backup be Done? - Systems that run all the time need to be backed up
while they are running. Systems that run during the day need to be backed up at
night.

What Type of backup should be done? - Full Backup, Incremental, Differential,

Online

What Media will be used for the Backup Up? - Need to consider speed and volume

Where the backup will be kept? - There is no point storing the backup in the same
place as the original.

Who is responsible for the backup and testing the recovery?

How frequent will the backup take place? - Every day, weekly etc. Need to
consider how valuable the data is
TASK ONE: KEYWORD
Research and write in your own words a
definition for the key term archiving.

3 minutes
TASK ONE: KEYWORD
Archiving is the term used to refer to making a
copy of data or files which are no longer in use,
removing the files from the network or system
and then storing the files away from the
computer, ready to be accessed at a later date
if required.
TASK TWO: DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
BACKUP AND ARCHIVING
With your definition of backups and archiving,
what is the difference between the two key
terms?

5 minutes
TASK TWO: DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
BACKUP AND ARCHIVING
When files are backed up, the original data still
remains on the system.

Whereas with archiving, once a copy has been

made, the original files are removed from the
system.
TASK THREE: BENEFITS OF
ARCHIVING
What are the benefits of archiving files?

5 minutes
TASK THREE: BENEFITS OF
ARCHIVING
you have a permanent record or source of the
data/files that are no longer in use
reduces data which is stored on the network
or system thus making it faster to back-up
network storage space is expensive. By
archiving data it frees up space for data or
files which are currently in use.
improves the performance of the system since
less files stored

2. List three ways in which data can be
compromised? (3 marks)
