4 Major Roles in Literacy

Reading or Literacy Specialist
Roles and Job Duties:

Work with students who are struggling to read & write, grades K-
12.
The primary role is an instructional one
They must have the skills, knowledge, and disposition to
collaboratively work with teachers to improve general classroom
literacy instruction.
They support teachers by providing resources and ideas about
assessment and instruction.
A reference for teachers, who have questions about struggling
readers in their classrooms.
Help MTSS process to limit unnecessary referrals for SPED testing
Literacy Coach
Role and Job Duties:

Support teacher learning to help Improve classroom instruction.


Work with individual or groups of teachers
They influence literacy programs schoolwide (developing
curriculum, selecting instructional materials).
Helping secondary-level teachers focus on teaching the content
of their specific disciplines.
Helping elementary teachers focus on the development of
literacy skills across the disciplines.
Literacy Coordinator
Roles and Job Duties:

Develop, evaluate, and lead school or district literacy programs.


Lead committee efforts to develop and implement the school
literacy program and select or develop materials.
Collaborate with others to increase the effectiveness of school
literacy efforts.
Write and manage proposals for Title I or other grants.
Work with school leaders, principals, and other literacy
coordinators, to help with changes in their building or district.
Reading Leadership Team
Roles and Job Duties:

Support learning and teaching for the ENTIRE community -


students, teachers, parents, and educational leaders
Enhance and support literacy in the school
Building a literacy culture through an action plan
Create and manage the action plan
Collect and analyze school literacy data
Attend professional development courses about literacy
Provide staff with literacy information and resources
