MUSIC VIDEO

ASSIGNMENT 2
GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the
relevant elements you need to cover in your Music
Video Assignment 02
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and
share it with your group so you always have a copy
some sections require you to delete the information on
the slide and replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you
should be doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress
through the pre-production phase.
TASK 1 Idea Generation and
Research
RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or dont like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing
styles, techniques and conventions that we have
looked at in previous sessions. Explore how you could
interpret the song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant,
images, mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to
generate these
EASY EASY-KING KRULE
IDEA 1- VHS camcorder and video effects to make the
video look very abstract
Idea 2- VHS camcorder without effects, will give the
effect of an old video but the images and shots will still
be clear and the video will be easy to view and
understand for more people
Idea 3- HD camera, this would somewhat subtract rom
the meaning and tone of the song as it is based around
urban London and the more gritty, depressing side of
life so if the video was filmed with a high quality
camera it would need significant editing to work with
the song.
RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance,
etc and how this might link to your production
ANOTHER ONE-MAC
DEMARCO

This video uses a low quality camera and possibly effects, this is in keeping
with the aesthetic of Mac Demarco and is used in many of his videos. The
video is edited so that he appears in two different ways, he is either singing
and playing instruments or dancing around in a mask ,he is often seen
standing in the sea with instruments in the video.
ODE TO VICEROY-MAC DEMARCO

The video for ode to viceroy uses a fisheye lens and effects to
achieve its aesthetic, I am planning on creating images similar
to this.
ATMOSPHERE-JOY
DIVISION

The video for atmosphere is an example of a video

without any kind of performance, the video only
features the band briefly in pictures and there isn't any
lip-sync, I am not planning on including lip-sync in my
video so this is a good example to follow.
TAKYON-DEATH GRIPS

The video for takyon is the most interpretive on the

list, it uses effects to change many shots in the video
so they are no longer recognisable, I am planning on
using effects similar to this but to lesser extent.
SHAMPOO-BONES

The video for shampoo uses a VHS camera similar to

the one I am thinking of using and it also uses effects I
am going to use, for example many shots are re-
winded and played again and the video uses many
shots with fast cuts.

CONVENTIONS
There are many conventions in music videos, I am
going to edit the video so it fits with the speed of the
song. I am also going to use shots to illustrate what the
lyrics are saying to make the video have a more literal
meaning. However I am going to use more interpretive
images to illustrate the more ambiguous lyrics.
MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]

Out Getting
Ribs by King
SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
I can make a video with my own artistic influences and
illustrate the meaning of a song
I can make a unique video
I dont particularly need anyone to be in the video so I
can film lots of footage on my own
I am not including a performance in the video so it will
be a lot easier to edit, as there will be no singing to
sync to the music
I am thinking of using an old VHS camcorder which
would mean that I dont need to add all of the effects
in after filming
SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
The use of a VHS camera would mean that getting
footage onto a computer would be difficult and would
require further equipment
The lack of people in the video means that I am going
to need much more footage to fill out the song
Some shots require specific lighting/time of day and
events so I will need to wait and plan my filming
around this
I need to make sue that every shot is different and
interesting, and that they fit the songs
lyrics/sound/tone in some regard
With no lip-sync or performance I will effectively be
using b-roll footage for the entire video, this means
that I am going to need to make all of the shots pretty
much perfect and edit very well to make the video
interesting and entertaining
FINAL IDEA ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Borderline (live)/ King Krule
King Krule is one of several monikers of Archy Marshall, a 22
year old from London. He started writing and recording music
at an early age after attending the Brit School. He also releases
music as DJ JD Sports, Edgar the Beatmaker, Edgar the
Breathtaker, The Return of Pimp Shrimp and Archy Marshall. He
has brought out one album under the King Kruke name called 6
Feet Beneath the Moon, the album was highly praised and
Marshall now has a cult following.
Marshall is friends with several members of the West Coast hip-
hop outfit Odd Future and has produced instrumentals for Earl
Sweatshirt. He is also friends with Irish rapper Rejjie Snow and
has featured on some songs with Snow. Marshall has featured
on several tracks and has branched out into visual art with his
brother Jack, the two worked together on 2015s A New Place 2
Drown which was a soundscape album, a photography/art
book and a short film detailing Marshalls day-to-day life.
Marshalls music spans several genres including jazz and hip-
hop. King Krule is part of the alternative/dark wave/punk
jazz/indie rock genres.
FINAL IDEA TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
The song I have picked is a live version of Borderline
by King Krule. I have picked the live version because it
fits more with my chosen aesthetic and the song is a
lot more minimalistic, featuring only Marshall on guitar
and vocals. The song has many meanings but to me it
represents the difficulties Krule faces in life,
particularly revolving around themes of love and his
mind, he also often references that he doesnt know
which path to take in life. The song is 3 minutes and 10
seconds in length. The song is very laid back and has a
reasoanbly slow pace. The style of the song is
acoustic/live, the live version is very different to the
album version, with the album version featuring
drums, bass and more vocal effects than the live
version which features a guitar and vocals using
reverb.
FINAL IDEA YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
My video is effectively going to be my interpretation of
the song and Marshalls music in general. It is going to
feature quite gritty and industrial images like graffiti
and architecture, contrasting with images of nature
and more human elements of society. I am going to
feature in the video also. I am planning on wearing
clothes to represent my view of youth culture in
modern Britain as this is a very important time for
young people. I am going to be wearing a Palace shirt,
Palace is a brand born out of the struggle of young
people trying to live the way they choose, this is in
keeping with the music of Marshall who grew up in a
very similar environment to the Palace crew. The genre
conventions of my video are VHS and low quality
visuals, use of video effects and use of text and other
imagery. Examples of this can be seen in Ode to
Viceroy by Mac Demarco and Easy Easy by King Krule.
TASK 2 Pre-production
Assessment
GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make
your music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
GUIDANCE:
BUDGET TARGET
You have provisionally given an outline target of 2000
to make your music video
This target should include a 10% contingency [that
means your budget should allow for 200 pounds
within the budget so realistically you aim lower than
1800]
Your budget should account for everything, except your
own time and input
Consider more than one option to solve a requirement
you may be able to balance your budget later, there
will have to be a compromise somewhere
GUIDANCE:
TIME
You will need to plan a schedule for the pre-
production/production/post-production
Nominally you should work on 2 weeks pre-production,
1 week filming [2 college days Mon./Tues first week
after half term] and 2 weeks edit/post-production
Who is going to do what? How will you split the time?
When can you film? What is the availability of the
equipment/resources/locations/personnel?
What problems can you foresee? How will you
overcome them?
TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
I am going to make a music video for the song Easy Easy by King
Krule.
I am going to make the video with an old camcorder to give it a
more home-made feel and to reflect the lyrics and tone of the
song.
The tempo of the song is 146 BPM so the song is quite fast
paced. The lyrics are based around struggles with the police
and how mundane everyday life is.
Specific outline your intended technical/equipment requirements
Camcorder, tapes, premier,
Include any details that you think [you could use material from
your pitch]
LOCATIONS
York city center
Bishopthorpe
Naburn Bridge

There are not any problems with distance or access,

however it may be difficult to film if it is raining or if I
need to get permission to film in certain locations. The
cost of filming in these locations should not be a
problem because much of the video will be filmed out
of the city center.
EQUIPMENT
I am using my own camera to film the video but I may
need to borrow a tripod and possibly a college camera
to film in higher quality. To hire equipment I need to fill
out a risk assessment and send it along with a request
to borrow equipment to a media tutor.
There is an equipment hire website called
hireacamera.com, I have found a Canon 5D for 64 a
day, I would use this camera as it is good for filming
and is cheap, so I can save money for other parts of
the video.
FACILITIES
I am going to edit the video myself which will make the
process of hiring an editing suite much cheaper and
potentially easier as I wont have to explain all of the
shots and effects to the editor.
PERSONNEL
I am filming the majority of the video, I may ask a
friend to film some parts that have me in them as I
cant film them myself. I am able to film any day and
my friend is able to film Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
We are both into photography and this will help us to
frame the video, we have also found locations for the
video where we could film without interruptions
I do not need any cast, I am going to be in some parts
of the video and the rest of the video wont need
anyone to star in it. An advantage of this is that it
doesnt cost me anything to hire somebody and travel
and food will be very cheap as I can walk to all of the
places I am filming.
PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
I am going to need to wear the same outfit for each
day of filming to maintain continuity, however this will
be easy as I can control it and make sure that I look the
same. I am not planning on using any props.

Research local production spaces for edit and post production

costs
Local equipment hire companies have costs for camera, lenses
and kit [tripod, dolly, steadicam rigs, etc]
Travel by vehicle can be nominally charged at 40p per mile so
you need to know how far you location is from where you are!
CODES OF PRACTICE
AND REGULATIONS
I will need permission to use the song as it is
copyrighted by True Panther and XL Recordings.
I am not planning on using anyone apart from myself in
the video so this should not be a problem.
I am not planning on having anyone else in the video
apart from myself and I am 18 so this should not be a
problem
I am filming most of the footage in locations that wont
need permission such as Naburn Bridge
I am filming on bridges and near roads and rivers so
this could be a heath and safety risk
FINANCE/PRODUCTION
COSTS
Using industry rates cards and researched costs of equipment [cameras], cast,
crew, props and facilities [locations, edit rooms, etc] calculate the likely cost of your
production
Camera- 192 for 3 days hire
Facilities-
there wont be any costs for costume or props however travel and food need to be
paid for, the cost for me to travel to college is 13 per week but I could purchase
cheaper tickets or get a lift. Food would not be a big cost as I am the only person in
the crew. I may also need to purchase tapes for my camera, however they are not
expensive.
the budget for the video is 2000, the majority of the budget would be spent on
editing and licenses.
How will you deal with any extra costs? Contingency fund? What percentage of your
budget should this be? [hint: add 10% on to the final cost, this should cover it!]- I
Do you foresee any problems? How will you manage this/over come them?
I may need to buy some tapes for my camera however they are very cheap so this
would not be a problem.
OPTION 1
The camera hire is not relevant as I am using my own
camera. I may need to buy tapes for the camera but I own
several and cannot realistically foresee myself using all of
them. The lack of costs for the camera and
crew/actors/costume means that I can hire the editing suite
for much longer and edit more carefully and consider/try
many more effects and shot lengths/shot placement.
FINAL BUDGET
BREAKDOWN
Provide a costs table for your budget, if you have
considered more than one cost option, provide
alternative final budgets and state a preference with
justification for which option you would choose.
The budget of 2000 is going to be more than enough
for my video as I am using my own camera equipment
and editing the video myself. The costs I can foresee
are hiring an editing suite and potentially needing to
buy tapes for my camera.
BUDGET EXPLANATION
AND JUSTIFICATION
The majority of my budget will be spent on an editing
suite, with a small amount of money needed for my
food and travel costs. This is a benefit to me because I
can hire a better editing suite for longer which will
hopefully result in a better video.
TASK 3.1 Visual Planning
PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you pre-visualise the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEP
T BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the look & feel
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the mise-en-scene
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you to
approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have
inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
CONCEPT BOARD
CONCEPT BOARD
RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic test reel
using existing footage to convey the type of video you want to
make
STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN (VERSE 1)
You know I tried so hard

My feelings just cant discard

The way in which I fell into
Your heart was never what I once knew
Lately my skull has kept
Dividing lines deep set and paved
Two paths too wander through to depart
And sever desires to pursue

For the first verse I am planning on using many shots with fast cuts, the shots will be
mostly of landscapes and things I come across in the locations I am filming. I am planning
on getting some shots which match the lyrics such as shots of police for the first part of
the song.
STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN (CHORUS)
And the soul chokes

To cause the tide

To enforce divide

This whole devotion has morphed in time

Ill escort her mind to solve my crimes

Reach slow motion to con the mind

For the chorus I am planning to have more shots of me and less
cuts as the chorus is not as packed with lyrics as the verses. I am
planning to have shots of me and some more shots like I used in
the verses, I am not going to be performing in the video as I
dont think it would match the aesthetic I am trying to achieve.
STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN (VERSE 2)
See here I trace my steps
To where my senses left
And rain had turn my sense to mush
This slowly seeping straight through the crust
Now let these stains of gunk slip down
To where my head once sunk and drowned
Just await for a while to see
My body has merged to the deep krule sea
For the second to last verse I am going to stick to the formula of
the first verse and the chorus, this verse is shorter so I am
planning on using longer shots with less cuts to draw it out and
to vary the pace of the video.
STRUCTURE BREAKDOWN (CHORUS 2)
But my soul floats
Adrift thoughtless minds, distorted lines
The soul is broken down, borderlines
To cause the tide, to enforce divide
This whole devotion has morphed in time
Ill escort her mind to solve my crimes
Reach slow motion, con the mind
For the outro of the song I am planning on slowing the pace of
the video significantly, this will match the pace of the song,
which slows down at the end of the second verse. I am planning
on having much less cuts and only a few shots in this part of the
video to slow the pace and allow the video to end without it
being too abrupt.
STRUCTURE BREAKDOWN (OUTRO)
Girl I never know
At least when you look to the stars they still glow
Girl not for me though
My head empty even when we are toe to toe
Girl I suppose ill forever be
Ill forever be the only one who knows
Aspirations and goals
Well ill forever be alone
For the outro of the song I am planning on slowing the pace of
the video significantly, this will match the pace of the song,
which slows down at the end of the second verse. I am planning
on having much less cuts and only a few shots in this part of the
video to slow the pace and allow the video to end without it
being too abrupt.
STORYBOARDING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
https://www.storyboardthat.com
http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]

Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and

scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
S T O RY B O A R D
SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-
production folder.
TASK 3.2 Organizational
Planning
PRODUCTION GROUP
INFO
Include names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is
suggested
Benjamin Ashton-
LOCATION
INFORMATION
Information and images of your location[s] for filming
You should have address details, clearance/permissions
for filming, recce photos and floor plans [including
camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
Assess each location for any issues and suggest
solutions
LOCATIONS
RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing
document, you should evaluate if anything changes in
production and when you put control measures in
place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each
location
RISK ASSESSMENT
CONTINGENCY
PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or
to minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
CONTINGENCY PLAN
PRODUCTION
SCHEDULE
Provide an outline of what you will do on which days
during production
You should broadly plan to the following structure:
- 2 weeks pre-production
- 1 week filming [plan for up to 2 days]
- 2 weeks editing [essentially 2 days for every day you
filmed]
SCHEDULE
Tuesday 21st March- film in Bishopthorpe
