SUPPORT GROUP USING ART
THERAPY

There are a number of classes offered through Southeastern Family

Violence Center, including W.A.V.E and Young Family Connect. The
women in the shelter are allowed to attend these classes and many
take the opportunity to attend

My project is creating a support group using art therapy for the

clients at SFVC. This support group will use art therapy to create a
supportive and open environment for clients
WHO AND WHERE?

This project will be for the women and children who are clients at the
Southeastern Family Violence Center Shelter.

The support group will be held at the shelter

WHY IS THIS PROJECT
IMPORTANT?
There have been studies that have proven that art therapy can be an effective
way for domestic violence victims to express what they are going through and
what they have experienced. Studies also show that clients are more likely to
open up and start talking when they are working with their hands.
This also allows a temporary breather for the clients to take a moment and do
something enjoyable as they are constantly working towards their goals and
dealing with the results of leaving a violent relationship.
Working with clients in the shelter you get to hear about their situation
through intakes and other forms of paperwork, this allows the clients to open
up and tell us anything else they would like us to know as wellwhile doing so
in a supportive environment.
THE FIRST GROUP

The first group setting was held with the children in the shelter, myself
and another intern gathered the children allowing the mothers to have a
brief moment to themselves. While we had the children gathered with
had a valentine's project for them to make for their mothers. It took three
separate settings with the children to complete the project and the end
result was both rewarding for the children and their mothers.
THE CHILDREN'S
PROJECT
The children outlined their hands
and made them into tree's where
they attached paper hearts and
attached the tree to the flower pot
that had treats for their mothers.
THE SECOND GROUP

The second group will consist of the women in the shelter and we will be
putting together spring wreaths for the clients to put on their doors while
in the shelter as well as empowering them while they create something
they can put on the doors of their new homes. This also creates a time for
the women to have an open discussion in a supportive enviornment
