What is leadership?
Process through which an individual attempts to intentionally influence another individual or
group in order to accomplish a goal. Process that should effectively accomplish goals. Efficiently
use people and resources, and be respectful of individuals involved in or affected by the process.

Six commonly recognized types of power:


1. Formal Power (Legitimate Power) bestowed on a person in the form of
positional authority
2. Reward Power ones ability to reward others who act in desired manner.
Anyone can reward others
3. Punishment Power Usually accompanies formal authority. Used to discourage
undesired behaviors
4. Expert Power expertise of a person who has special knowledge, skill, and
experience
5. Charismatic Power (Referent Power) to influence another by force of character
or charisma
6. Information Power power from the possession of critical information needed
by others
Leadership Without Formal Authority
Big L Leaders

Formal positions of authority have greater potential to


influence others. Typically have more power because they have
additional resources available to them.

Little L Leaders

People who do not possess a formal managerial position to


lead.
