    Fascism arose in response to postwar economic problems and political instability in Europe. In Italy specifically, economic issues and fears of communist revolution led industrialists and the wealthy to support Benito Mussolini and his fascist party. Mussolini and his fascist militia, the Black Shirts, used violence against socialists and unions to gain power. In 1922, with threats of marching on Rome, Mussolini was appointed Prime Minister by the King, and by 1926 he had established himself as the authoritarian leader of Italy.
