PRODUCTION LOG:
GUIDANCE
This document is for you to track the progress of your
production filming, editing and post-production.
This is so you can track what you did and how you did it,
explaining and amendments and changes you made and
tracking the decisions that have shaped the practical creation of
your music video.
The more detail you include about how you made your music
video, the better. The document is broken down in to two
sections, Filming and Editing, each of these is then made of
specific elements that occur in both.
For each slide there is a prompt detailing what you should
include, delete the prompt after you have complete the slide.
Remember, images often show what youve done more
effectively than words. Use text to explain an illustration.
FILMING
Explain what worked and didnt work about your filming and how you managed this covering the following
areas:
Technical I didnt have many problems camera wise as I had a lot of help from my crew, however at
one point during my filming the battery ran out and I had forgotten to get a spare, luckily I still had time to
book out a spare one from college, however this has certainly taught me a lesson about being prepared
in the future.
Logistical My locations were great and worked fantastically when filming, there were no access
problems as I was shooting on a public footpath and at home. The weather was also very cooperative as
it was completely calm with no rain whatsoever.
Personnel My crew were fantastic and no one let me down, they all turned up on time and really
helped me get my filming done.
Planning ? In terms of planning I feel that most of the filming went to plan save me not sticking to my
contingency plan and getting a spare battery to go along with the original. Also my parents got back quite
late meaning that I had to film at night, resulting in me having to use artificial lighting as opposed to the
ambient lighting I was hoping for.
Next steps I Have acquired all of the necessary footage that I need for my music video, however I
found that during the creation of the video that I had way too much footage and thus had to edit the video
using less of the footage due to the sheer length of some of it, however I believe that this has actually
helped me to make my music video even better and am very glad that I decided to change these
aspects.
*If you make any drastic changes to your video you MUST add this to your planning
documentation and state how and why this has happened
EDITING
Record your edit progress, decisions, problems, etc. in this section
Within the editing process I had to make a fair few decisions in order to solve some of
the problems I had come across, for example I found out that I actually had too much
footage for the video and thus had to decide which bits of footage I used and where I
had to find suitable replacements for certain scenes as some of them proved to be too
long, however I believe that using less of the footage and then carefully hand picking
the essential footage to go along with the beat has drastically improved my final
product. Also I came across a problem halfway through the song where the footage I
wanted to use proved to short and there was time left, however the left over unused
footage was too long to fill the section and couldnt be shortened enough for it to still
retain a decent standard, so some of the footage I had already used had to be re-used,
however I did so in such a way that It fit the beat of the song perfectly so it shouldnt
be a problem.
Try to explain how you worked and justify why you chose to work the way you did.
The way I chose to work involves me taking a very step-by-step process which
followed the basic principle of: importing, checking, ordering, play check, adjustments
and then a final play check. I chose to work this way as I found it very methodical, and
thus easy to follow, plus it allowed me to take each stage with care and sort out any
mistakes with that specific section before moving on to the next.
This turquoise
MY EDITING PROCESS square is my
song/main audio
file.

This is where I have

imported all of my footage
to, notice the .MOV files
have a blue square, these
are all of my footage files.

These Pink squares are

my adjustment layers
where I have applied
different effects to
different sets of footage.
This section shows how
this is the adjustment

MY EDITING PROCESS
layer for my interior
scenes and contains all
of the settings I have
applied to this particular
layer

This section shows what

specific settings I have
applied to this adjustment
layer, which as you can
see mostly involve color
correction, as the
artificial lighting within the
scenes had obscured
some of the coloring on
certain objects.
MY EDITING PROCESS

This row is where all my This green/turquoise

This row contains all of the row is the entirety of
adjustment layers that I have footage is found, I have
ordered it to specifically fit the song that I am
used with my footage as a way using
to make the coloring more the song as It progresses
appropriate for the theme.
MY EDITING PROCESS
How I ordered my editing process:
1. I started by importing all of my footage into adobe premiere and then checked to make
sure all of it was there and I wasnt missing any etc. I also imported my song choice
along with it.
2. I then placed the song file into the audio slot and listened to it the whole way through so
I could already start to form a mental plan of what footage to use and where.
3. I started to place my footage and shorten it etc. as needed to fit the beat/lyrics of the
song, I continued doing this until I was satisfied with how it all fit together after
listening to and watching the whole thing several times.
4. I then noticed how some of the colors in the darker parts of the footage were way too
light and cheery for the theme I wanted, I then decided to make an adjustment layer for
the outside shots to make them seem darker and a lot colder.
5. I then also noticed that because of me having to film my interior shots at night and
having to use artificial light rather than ambient some of the colors of household
objects etc. became very obscured and so I made an adjustment layer for those shots
as well as a way of color correcting them.
6. To finish off I went through the whole video again, making sure all of the new color
corrections worked with the scenes and generally just making sure the whole thing was
perfect.
EDITING
FILE MANAGEMENT
Screenshot and annotate where you have saved your work
and how you have organised your footage so you know
where it is this will also include your audio track for your
video and any other images, found footage, etc

This is the folder I

used to save my
footage and my audio
track.

This is my chosen audio These are a few of my shots, I

file which is found in the chose to organize them with
shots folder along with my interior shots first and then
the rest of the footage a cascading list of outdoor
shots, which all follow the
order of each section, form 1
to 8
EDITING
SETTING UP PREMIERE
Screenshot and annotate how you have set up a new
Premiere Pro project indicate what you called it, where you
saved it
You should also show how you set up your timeline,
indicating the video settings used [e.g. DSLR 1080p 25]
When creating a new
document this is the first
window that pops up so I will
put a name for the file where
the word untitled currently is
for this particular project I have
named it my music video
SETTING UP PREMIERE

After naming my new

project I have to
choose a sequence
preset, which for me
will be DSLR 1080p25
as that is what my
footage was shot with. I
also have the option to
name the sequence but
I chose not to as
sequence 1 pretty
accurately describes
what the sequence is.
SETTING UP PREMIERE

This is the window that now pops up after choosing my preset and is simply a
blank project free for me to now use however I wish.
EDITING
IMPORTING FOOTAGE
Show how you imported your footage, your file set up in
Premiere and how you have organised your different docs
[video, audio, etc]

I went to file > import

and then selected my
shots folder, I then
press ok and it will
upload the entirety of
that folder to my
premiere project.
IMPORTING FOOTAGE

After selecting what files I want to

import from my shots folder I
clicked import and then all of my
chosen files are transferred to the
small black window to the bottom
right.

I have organized my files with

the turquoise square
representing the audio file and
then the blue squares indicating
the video files, therefore they are
organized in a block system
with there being a block for
audio files and a block for video
EDITING
WORKSPACE
Show and describe the Premiere Pro workspace preview
window, bins, timeline, playback window, tool bar, audio
levels, etc
This is the preview window, and
as you can see I have selected
by audio file, the name of which
is shown in the source tab
above. As this is a video file it
will obviously not show and
video footage as if I placed one
of them in the preview window it
would allow me to watch it
before placing it into my music
video, as the preview window
does exactly that it allows you
to preview your footage etc.
before you use it in your actual
video.
WORKSPACE

The bins are basically folders within premiere where you can group together certain
files and then name the bin using a corresponding name, they are basically there to
help make your work more organized.

This is the timeline and like the name suggests the time is across the top in 30
second intervals, this is the section where you actually create the music video and
place your footage/audio etc.
WORKSPACE

This is the playback window. With the playback window you will watch any
footage you have put together in the sequence you have created.
Wherever you have placed the slider on the timeline is where the playback
window will start playing from after you click play. This window essentially
functions as the area where you can check what your video looks like
when its all together and also allow you to make sure your footage fits the
beat of the song etc.
WORKSPACE

This is the toolbar, it is a cascading menu of helpful tools to help with

the editing process, there are tools such as the razor which allows you
to split existing sections into separate ones, for example should one of
your adjustment layers fit with all of the scenes within a set sequence
bar one you can split off a chunk of that layer so that it only affects the
one that doesnt fit with the rest and then add different effects for that
singular shot.
WORKSPACE
This meter shows audio levels when you playback your music
video etc. as it progresses the levels will either dip or go upward,
so should you feel you project is to loud or too quiet you can then
make adjustments as needed.
EDITING
ASSEMBLY EDIT
Show how you put together your basic sequence in the order
you want it previewing clips, dragging to the timeline,
trimming/cutting, etc
If you have a lip sync, pay special attention to showing how
you synchronised the footage with the audio track

Before I even started to drag anything over to the timeline and setting up my
sequence I listened to the whole track to make sure I had a basic mental plan
of how the sequence was going to be set up. I then went through all of my
footage to see what fit and what didnt. then I started the song from the
beginning and placed the footage that I felt fitted with that particular section of
the song. I then looked at the footage in that section and trimmed it to fit the
section better. After doing this for the whole song I then went back over and
created color correction adjustment layers to make the whole sequence seem
much better. To finish off I had a final playback of the entire video and then
made corresponding changes to any mistakes I found.
EDITING
REFINEMENT
Show and explain how you have refined and improved your
initial sequence edit

The only real type of refinement that I did with my initial sequence edit was to go back
through it and trim down any clips that didnt properly fit the beat of the music, as well
as any replacement or readjustments that need doing in the wake of me changing the
location or length of any piece of footage.
EDITING
COLOUR CORRECTION/SFX
Show and explain your colour correction process/effects
process use staged screenshots to show each part of the
process and the effect. Explain why you chose to do this
This is my interior adjustment layer
that I have used to correct the colors in
my inside shots as they were way too
warm, to the point where the colors of
some household objects had been
obscured, so I set up the adjustment
layer with a three-way color corrector
so that I could add the white back into
the banister on the stairs and some of
the walls as well.
COLOUR CORRECTION/SFX
I also used a second adjustment layer,
but this time for the outdoor shots as I
needed them to seem a lot colder, so I
set up an adjustment layer that used
the RGB curves so that I could make
the footage seem a lot colder/darker
just by tampering with the color
balance in each shot.
EDITING
EXPORT
Show how you exported your completed project, show which
settings you have used and explain your choice of file name
and where you have saved it

To export my document I first went to

file > export > media.
EXPORT
This window is then
brought up and then I
must choose a format,
which in this case is
H.264.

I also have to choose a

preset which in this case
is YouTube HD 720p 25,
I then just hit export and
then await the bar to
complete, then my file is
exported.
