COMBINED IMPACT AND ATTRITION METHOD

PRINCIPLES OF IMPACT AND

ATTRITION METHOD:
BALL MILL
a comminution method which produces size reduction by both
impact and attrition of particles.

Parts:
Hollow longitudinal cylinder
Mounted and rotates on its
horizontal longitudinal axis.
Balls
Occupies 30-50% of the total volume
Ball size depends on the feed and mill size
Large balls- breaks down course feed
materials
Smaller balls- helps in forming fine
products by reducing void spaced
between balls.

*The amount of material in the mill is of considerate importance:

Too much feed produces cushioning effect
Too little causes loss of efficiency and abrasive wear of the mill
parts
Speed of Rotation - most important factor in ball mill
operation.
*Optimum rate of rotation: depends on mill diameter but is usually 0.5 revolutions
per second

@Low angular velocity @High angular velocity @2/3s of the critical

-balls move with drum until the -the balls are thrown out on the angle velocity
force due to gravity exceeds mill wall by centrifugal force - Centrifugal occurs
the frictional force of the drum -No size reduction occurs - A cascading action is
bed produced
-balls slide back en masse to - Ball are lifted on the rising
the base of the drum side of the drum until
- Produces very little relative dynamic angle of repose is
movement = minimal size exceeded
reduction - Maximum size reduction
occurs by impact and
attrition
ALTERNATIVE
TECHNIQUES:
FLUID ENERGY MILLING (JET MILL)
Size reduction method that acts by particle impaction and
attrition.
A mill/micronizer with a 20-200 mm diameter hollow toroid.

Air is usually injected as a high pressure jet through nozzles at

the bottom of the loop
High velocity = @turbulence zone where solid particles are
fed
High air kinetic energy = causes particles to impact with
other particles with sufficient momentum for fracture to occur
Turbulence- ensures that particle-particle collisions can
produce substantial size reduction by impact and attrition.
Particle size classifier retains the particles inside the toroid
until sufficiently fine and are the entrained in the air and
exhausts from the mill
Other Types of Fluid Energy
Mill:

Use of horizontal opposed jets where

feed material is forced

Use of a single air jet to feed particles

directly on the target plate where
impaction causes fracture.
ALTERNATIVE
TECHNIQUES:
PIN MILLS
-two discs with closely spaced pins rotate against one another at high speeds.
-size reduction occurs by impaction with the pins and attrition between the pins
as particles travel outwards as influenced by centrifugal force.
