CONCEPT:
Ultra filtration is a pressure driven membrane separation
process in which water and low molecular weight substance
permeate through a membrane while particles colloids and
macromolecules are retained.
The primary removal mechanism is size exclusion although
the electrical charge and surface chemistry of the particle or
membrane may effect the purification efficiency.
Ultra filtration pore rating range from approximately since
only high molecule weight species are removal in UF, the
osmotic pressure difference across the membrane surface is
negligible.
low applied pressure are therefore sufficient to achieve high
flux rates from an ultra filtration membrane.
In conventional ultra filtration configuration the process
solution is pressurizes typically between 10 to 70 psi, while in
contact with a supported semi permeable membrane, solutes
smaller thane the molecules weight out off emerge as a ultra
filtrate and retained molecules are concentrated on the
pressurized side of the membrane.
Its pore rating size is approximately 1000 to 500000 Da.
Simple ultra filtration is shown in fig
