PE Standards
Standard 1 - The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and
movement patterns.

Standard 2 - The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and
tactics related to movement and performance.

Standard 3 - The physically literate individual demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve
and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.

Standard 4 - The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that
respects self and others.

Standard 5 - The physically literate individual recognizes the value of physical activity for health,
enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction.
Vision Statement
Our vision is to use technology to get students excited about physical
education, develop a passion for fitness, develop lifelong learners, and
provide a quality, science based physical education program.
Why We Need Technology in
PE?
Keep up with the times (technological advances)

Maintain and renew interest in PE

Hold students accountable

Allow students of all abilities to be successful

Can be used to measure participation/effort

Can be used to track student progress

Students can take ownership of participation/effort

Keeping up with the times
Decrease in physical activity among youth has led to higher rates of obesity

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the percentage of children
with obesity in the United States has more than tripled since the 1970s. Today,
about one in five school-aged children has obesity.

CDC recommends 60 minutes of Moderate to Vigorous physical activity a day

A 2013 survey from the CDC found that only 27.1% of students were getting the
recommended amount of physical activity for optimal health.

What Technology Will Improve
PE Classrooms?

Heart Rate Monitors!

Why Heart Rate Monitors?
Use heart rate training to promote physical
fitness

All students have different fitness abilities

Difficult for physical educators to grade effort

Students need clear expectations

Ability for students to compete on an even

playing field

Holds students accountable

What is Heart Rate Training?
Heart rate training is a
scientifically based
cardiovascular training that
uses percentages of
maximum heart rate to
determine physical exertion
levels

A Case Study
Enhancing P.E. in Illinois Sept. 2013
http://iphionline.org/pdf/P.E._Case_Study_Naperville.pdf

Naperville, Illinois-Naperville Central High Schools Learning Readiness P.E. program has been engaging
students in meaningful physical activity since 2003.

Physical education is more than a few baseball bats and basketballs. You
need to arm physical education teachers with the proper technology, like
heart rate monitors and software to track their students fitness. -Paul
Zientarski, Former LRPE Coordinator, Naperville Central High School
